Our Township needs a flag Would you believe it? Only one municipality in the greater Toronto area is without a flag of its own. You guessed it! The flagless township is non other than our own beloved Scugog. But this year as a present to recognize Canada's 125h birthday, we'd like to give Scugog its own "official" flag' What would our flag look like? Would it be plain and simple? Would it depict symbols of the area such as fish, wildlife, the lake, agriculture, parks or our recently identified symbol, the Purple Martin? Who knows?? And that's where you come in. We're going to have a flag design contest. It will be open to anyone,who submits a proper entry. There is no cost to eater and to make the competition more interesting we're dividing it into two categories - "Open" and "Youth." The youth category covers children currently attending elementary school and pre schoolers. The "open" category is just that - open to anyone of any age who wishes to enter. The winner of each category will be awarded $100.00 and then the designer of the overall winner will receive an additional $300.00. OMAF approves soil testing labs The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) has approved three soil testing laboratories which have successfully completed the accreditation process. Agreements between OMAF and the labs have been signed which allow them to perform soil tests for the ministry. These tests allow farmers to monitor nutrient levels in their fields and to select THE FINAL economically and environmentally sound rates of fertilizers for the crops. Two labs 'have been accredited to deliver the basic soil test for manganese and zinc. They are Accutest Labs in Nepean, Ont and Agri- Food Labs in Guelph. The third lab has been accredited to deliver basic tests for manganese.
