Region vows to take 'drastic' action against landfill sites FROM PAGE 1 ing 10 keep a major landfill out of Scugog Township. "Unlike a similar "information'y meeting two weeks ago which was poorly attended, the one Sunday - evening'attracted about 220 people who heard several speakers on this On June 4, the Interim- Authority (IWA) announced potential si sit s for a rR in g five in Scugog Co: a on Highway 7A, west of Blackstock) and three on Highway 12, south of Manchester) Herrema, along with Scugog Mayor Howard Hall invited to speak at the Sunday night meeting. Mayor Hall, who has\taken some criticism for not attending earlier public meetings, said he is Working towards the same goal as PEST and Zero Garbage. "1 feel my way of doing this will work, just as your" methods are working," he saidy adding that twp years ago whe potential dump sites were ear- marked in Cartwright, he took a stand opposing them. . * As for the current dump site .issue, he said "I ha been sit- ting back doing nothing." Mayor Hall noted that council passed a resolution opposed to Bill 143; he sent a letter to the Agricultural Minister over the fact farmland is identified as potential sites; and on July 13, he sent a sharply worded letter to the Premier Bob Rae demanding the resignation of environment minister Ruth Grier. He said that letter is generat ing requests for media interviews from outside Scugog Township, and he is hopeful that Opposition lcadess Mike Harris (PC) 'and Lyn McLeod (Liberal) will raise the let- tes in the Legislature this week to get a response from the Premier. He ended his remarks by stating "I respect what you are doing (io fight the dump in Scugog) 1 hope you respect whdt 1 am doing." In other developments, members of Zero Garbage and PEST attend- € ed a day-long workshop Saturday in Dagmar and strongly urged IWA officials to include the impact on tourism as a criteria in the final selection of a dump site in Durham. They feel that a dump in Scugog would hate a huge negative impact on the local tourist trade which plays a big role in the economy of the Township. Bill Lishman, chairman of Zero Garbage showed some slides of aerial photos of the massive Brock West landfill in Pickering. Visible in the photos were thousands of sea gulls. He noted that if a site sguth of Manchester was chosen 4 dump, the sea-gulls would eat there TOPSOIL YT) SCREENED TOPSOIL SEEN 945.7727 all day and in the evening, fly to the nearest lake (Scugog) for the night. Port Perry, he remarked is on the direct flight path between the site and the lake. Biologist Bob Almack, also a member of Zero Garbage, told the meeting mandatory source separa- tion of garbage is the key to doing away with the need for landfills. He said it would take leachate from a landfill about five years to start leaking into water supplies, there is further contamination from surface run-off and 21 toxic gases have been identified in the atmosphere at the Brock West landfill. As well, toxic wastes end up in landfills (via green garbage bags and illegal dumping) he said. "We don't need raw waste landfills in our back yard," he told the meeting. FIRE CALLS SCUGOG HALL NO. He said the sites in Manchester and near Blackstock have the potential to contaminate drinking water for Port Perry/Prince Albert &nd Blackstock residents. "For this rea- son, we must fight this to the very end," he said. Mr. Sparling also noted that both potential sites are within eight KM of the delicopiet landi pad at C y Memorial Hospital, and this may be a contravention of Federal regula- tions. Organizers were very pleased with the large tum-out at Sunday's meeting, an indication that more and more people in Scugog are aware of the issue and are willing to do what they can 10 prevent a land- fill in this Township. 4 The Green Ribbon campaign is off and ing with green ribbons available at Personal Touch in Port Perry. Peoplé; opposed to the landfills are being asked to wear a green ribbon to show their opposition. The Interim Waste. , Cre- ated by the provincial government, has identified 17-8ites in Durham Region for a landfill. That list will be narrowed to five or six in September, and by next spring, the IWA will announce its "preferred site" for "the Dyrham landfill. 15 WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-3281 Consider this a test to see if you're really prepared for what the future will bring.
