Driver fined The driver of a truck that killed a 14-year old Port Perry girl over a year ago was fined $500 in court last week on a charge of operating an un-safe vehicle. The accident that took the life of Julie Harris occurred July 1, 1991 on Highway 7A at Crandell Street in Port Perry. The 1985 truck was driven by 38-year old Neil McLaughlin of Blackstock. The driver testified he turned the wheel to the left try- ing to avoid the cyclist. He also testified the truck had been serviced less than a month before the accident and he had never noticed any problems with the brakes. Since the accident, McLaughlin sold his water haulage business. He does not plan to appeal the conviction. Town Hall 1873 concert series By Pat Smith The Town Hall Board is a group of dedicated volunteers, who govern the use and upkeep of the hall, and organize the Town Hall Concert Series. Board members meet on the first Monday of each month beginning in September, and ending in June. Our General Annual Meeting is held in May. At this time, annual reports from committee chairs are present- ed. Major repairs to the building are discussed and scheduled, as well as an annual clean-up of the building. This year, the back of the stage was re-surfaced and painted, all light shades were taken down and washed, wainscoting was washed, as well as interior windows. New exterior lights were installed 10 the Queen St. entrance. These were donated by Howard and Zula Hall, and they add much to the overall appearance of the building. We are also arranging for the installation of the air-conditioner, donated by Emiel's Place. This will do much 10 bring comfort to our audiences. As we are a non-profit organiza- tion, funds are always wanting for the maintenance of the building. Revenue is received from various groups which rent the hall for rehearsals, productions, weddings, etc. The Board establishes the crite- ria for the rental agreements, and monitors the use of the Hall.
