There are 57 different species of these' birds found in North America, 35 of which nest here in Ontario. calls from the sky. At one time | used to travel to Point Pelee to observe the war- blers. These days, because bird watching is so popular this area has become finches larger. Here in Durham Region, we are fortunate to have 18 of the 35 species nest- ing. Warblers are tiny, brightly coloured birds, smaller than a sparrow. Here are a few things to watch for when identifying war- blers (it helps to have your Bird Guide handy, too) 1/ Fast movement. They flit from limb to limb, often very high in the trees. 2/ Slender-and sharp-pointed bills, 3/ Males and females in their adult breeding plummage are usu- ally different colours. 4/ They don't always "warble." Some songs are quite musical, helping with identification. Migration is largely nocturnal. 5/ Long journeys over land and sea-expose them to many perils such as striking lighthouses or other tall structures, often with fatal results. The song of the warbler is sel- dom heard from the night sky dur- ing the spring migration, but on a calm, quiet night in late August \Jo! can hear their cricket-like alternative for people to- day is to travel to Rondeau Provincial Park, Long Point Provincial Park or closer to home, Presquille Park near Brighton. This year I was in the field in carly May to "Warbler watch" as I have done for some 30 years. The wonderment at seeing these beau- tiful birds in spring plummage is always a thrill for me. You know also there is always the chance you may see a rare species which has been blown up from the south, birds such as the Kentucky or Worm Eating Warbler, or perhaps the rare Kirtlands Warbler, found only in Who is a Warbler Watcher? He/she is any person you encounter on the path, binoculars around the neck, bird book in the (Wood Warblers -- the butterflies of the bird world Some will wonder why people become excited about watching warblers. It is, perhaps, the thrill of the chase, the thought that you springtime woods to 'observe all facets of nature. For the ardent Warbler Watcher, I think the ultimate experience would be to see a Black Poll warbler in Thickson Wood, then travel north to Churchill, Man. to observe this same bird on its nesting grounds, then finally back to Thickson Wood in late August to observe its full migration. All that would be left to observe is its winter habitat somewhere in South Ameri erica. . I am sure that given the oppor- tunity, most of us would be delighted to complete the year with a few weeks of "warbler watching" in the southern half of the continent. 1 know I would. The Naturalist Club had a hand, bli 8 about cheek patches and wing bars. It is not my intention to make fun of warbler watchers.
