EDITORIAL Why Ontario casinos now? The Ontario government is wying with the ides of opening six gambling casinos in this province, two in Toronto and the other four in cities close to the American border Not that we have any moral problem with legalized gam - bling. we have 10 wonder why Ontario is even contemplating this issue at this time. Money, of course. That's the main rea- son. Some studies indicate casinos could push a least $200 million into the government coffers every year. That's a tidy sum though it won't put much of a dent in the deficit which could go soaring this year alone to over $12 billion. And where will that money come from? The pockets of Ontario residents, that's where. And maybe some Americans will cross the border 10 gamble a few dollars as well. But knowing how Americans have developed a distinct dis-like | for things Canadian (like high prices for everything from time to spend money outside the casinos during the stay in the orovince Another thing 10 keep in mind about casino gambling in Ontario. There is only so much money 10 go around: Will the casinos cut ino race-track betting as some fear and really hun the racing industry in Ontario? Will Ontario residents stop buying lotiery tickets in large numbers '® save a few loonies 10 stick in the slot machines at the casinos? And what about all the service clubs and charitable organi- zations that are struggling now to raise money for thelr works twough bingos, raffles, SO/S0 draws and 50 on. It would seem logical to think that casino gambling would cut into these activities and put a damper on these sources of revenue for community A lot of them we struggling right now. They 't need to be fighting the provincial govern ment for money. We can't help but wonder If the casinos would be open on Sundey shopping. or =n improvement in the investment cli- 5 gasoline 10 a case of beer) we wonder if they will take the |. ad WHEN BRIAN COMES INTO SHAVE AND SEES THIS PICTURE OF TRUDEAU IN HIS MIRROR, WE SHOULD BE GOODPFOR A DAY OFF To the Edivor: This is » leer of intent from Peter Kaosle, chabrman of The Pet Walkathon, Kinsmen Club of Port Perry. 1 is our istention © hold this pet = LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pet walkathon is planned Funds will be raised in the form of pledge sheets that every walker will receive 1 get his or her own ponsors.
