The lengthy process of replacing the diesel buses and upgrading current in- frastructure is set to be complete by 2035. Oakville is marching in step with other municipal- ities that are also hoping to switch their older bus fleets to zero-emission electric buses. Last April, the Toronto Transit Commission ap- proved the purchase of 300 electric busses. Those ve- hicles are expected to be rolled out in 2023. Ottawa announced in June that it hope to be- come the first Canadian city to have a fully electric bus fleet by 2026. As of May 4, eight elec- tric buses are roaming the streets of Brampton. Of the $66.3 million slat- ed to be spent on the local project, $26.5 million is coming from the federal government, $22.1 million from the province and $17.6 million from the Town of Oakville. That money will go to- ward the purchasing of 73 electric buses. Procurement for many of the specific projects have already appeared to have begun. The process for buying those buses seems to be underway and are slated to, according to the town's report, be com- pleted by 2026. Accompanying infra- structure, like charging stations, are included in that. On-board Wi-Fi is al- so one the new pieces of technology to be included in the upgrades. The ser- vice will not only be aboard the vehicles, but al- so Oakville Transit facili- ties. The federal dollars for the project come from the Investing in Canada Infra- structure Program (ICIP). More specifically, it comes from the fund's Public Transit Stream. Oakville council ap- proved projects as part of their submission toward the fund in October of 2019.
