So says Oakville mosaic artist Elena Martoglio, who has been envisioning just such a captivating piece of artwork for Kerr Street for "some time." "I live in this neighbour- hood and see so much po- tential here. People travel to places where they're in- spired by art and culture. The creation of murals shouldn't be reserved only for cities and large urban places." Martoglio is more than visualizing these days; she is well on her way to bring- ing her plan to fruition, with the enthusiastic sup- port of local councillors, businesses and the public. Generous donations have been pouring into her GoFundMe campaign which will cover all costs, including the participa- tion of Ottawa mural artist Ryan Smeeton. Martoglio is just over $1,000 short of her $9,200 goal. Together, they will transform the side of a yel- low brick building at the northeast corner of Kerr and Washington streets, Smeeton painting the stunning floral mural and Martoglio adding the whimsical interactive mo- saic kite. "With the lockdowns and changes we've all been experiencing this last year, I feel an uplifting mu- ral is needed now, more than ever. It is my hope this mural will bring more colour and vitality to Kerr Village and that small businesses can benefit from this," she said. The project will begin once fundraising is com- plete, said Martoglio. "The mosaic portion will be done off-site and take about a week. I hope to install it at the same time the mural will be painted. That will proba- bly take about four to five days. We hope to have it done before the end of the summer." The Kerr Village BIA supports the project, said executive director Doug Sams. The mural will certain- ly beautify the area and stand out as you drive along Kerr Street, he said. Martoglio said she is pleased with the enthusi- asm for the project. "It's encouraging and gives me the impression there is room for more street art downtown Oak- ville."
