E WATERLOO (519) 725-5252 As part of a campaign to meet and high- light diverse voices in Waterloo Region and to welcome discussion about how commu- nities can work together to combat system- ic racism, we asked members of marginal- ized communities the question: "How can our community fight racism together?" Here's what Alejandra Amez has to say: "As a community we have the power to speak up against racism! Any act of dis- crimination and racism is an attack on the well-being of a community. Silence will be interpreted as acceptance. "We can act from home to promote toler- ance and diversity by encouraging our children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren to enjoy, appreciate and learn from other cultures: their food, art, festivals and tradi- tions. We can also act from our workplace by helping to create anti-racist environ- ments through awareness campaigns and participating in anti-racism trainings. "We can join forces with our neighbours by attending a vigil, raising funds for orga- nizations fighting against racism, partici- pating in anti-racism demonstrations and reporting every incident. The smallest hint of hate can turn into harassment, threats, physical violence or death. We must not remain silent!" Your Voice Against Racism is a cam- paign that aims to shine a spotlight on di- verse and marginalized communities in a series of photo essays discussing diversity and inclusion and social justice with a goal of creating change in our communities.
