Paid for by the Government of Ontario Community organiza- tions are speaking out after four members of a Muslim family were killed and a nine-year-old child was left with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle in London on June 6 in what police are calling a hate- motivated attack. The family was on a walk when struck by a pickup truck driven by 20- year-old man. The following are ex- cerpts from statements shared last week. "The Muslim communi- ty in London and Waterloo region are shocked and rat- tled. It is a difficult time for the community, who al- ready experience many ag- gressions because of their faith. The CMW has been constantly raising aware- ness about the devastating impact of Islamophobia in Canada, particularly and in our region. The CMW is also actively engaged in countering hate incidents within the Waterloo region through their hate report- ing system (reporting- hate.ca)." -- Coalition of Muslim Women (CMW) Kitchen Waterloo "We call on all levels of government -- federal, provincial, territorial, mu- nicipal -- across the coun- try to come together for a National Action Summit on Islamophobia to take immediate action on dis- mantling both violent forms of Islamophobia and systemic Islamophobia." -- The National Council of Canadian Muslims "We are alarmed by the rise in hate crimes and some of the public organiz- ing and public expressions of white supremacy that have made communities in this province less safe for members of targeted groups. Whether it is car- ried out systemically or through individual attacks we take seriously the rise of violence directed at com- munity members on the basis of race, religion, eth- nicity, country of origin and all other human rights protected grounds. We stand with Muslim com- munity members, sending love and prayers to all af- fected family and commu- nity members." -- Black Lives Matter Waterloo Region COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS SPEAK OUT AFTER MUSLIM FAMILY KILLED, INJURED COMMUNITY SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT WATERLOOCHRONICLE.CA
