A motion with this mes- sage was unanimously passed by regional council- lors during their June 16 session. The resolution, put forth by Regional Chair Gary Carr and seconded by Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton, asks the province to "use all resources and tools at its disposal to protect the Glen Abbey cultural heri- tage landscape, in recogni- tion of the importance of these lands to the town, re- gion and its residents." At issue is golf course owner ClubLink's plans for 3,222 residential units and more than 127,000 square feet of office and retail space on the Glen Abbey lands. Oakville council reject- ed the company's develop- ment application in 2018, with town staff contending that amount of develop- ment is not permitted or appropriate for the site and would amount to an un- planned growth area. ClubLink has pointed out that the valley lands, about 124 acres of the Glen Abbey property, would be- come permanent, publicly accessible green space through this plan. The matter is now set to go before the LPAT for a lengthy virtual hearing, starting in August. For Carr, provincial in- tervention to protect the Glen Abbey lands is "long overdue." He said there are a num- ber of options the Ford gov- ernment could pursue to preserve the lands, point- ing to the Oak Ridges Mo- raine Act as an example of protections put in place at the provincial level. Burton noted local MPPs and their Progres- sive Conservative party have all previously pledged to save Glen Ab- bey. "This resolution re- minds the MPPs, Premier Ford, his government and his party that they are run- ning out of time to reveal how they will keep their word," he said. The mayor thanked re- gional council on behalf of the Town of Oakville for its support in the face of ad- versity. "When any part of our shared regional structure, or bylaws, or Official Plans are under threat by outside forces, we always come to- gether," he said. Several local residents' associations also voiced support for Carr's motion, including representatives from Save Glen Abbey, We Love Oakville and Oakvil- legreen Conservation As- sociation. Neil Huddlestone of Save Glen Abbey said local citizens have invested tens of thousands of volunteer hours over the past five years in their efforts to pro- tect the site because they care about the community. "Now we need the pro- vincial government's lead- ership to show that they too care about what is hap- pening to our community," he said. "They need to stop this development and show that they are listening to the thousands of citizens and voters, as they have been asked to by our local MPPs and many others."
