MODEL YF6H1ME Y APPOINTMENT ONLY US 0 MODEL RW1H2MES A pair of Graham Paine's Oakville Bea- ver photos took first-place honours in the Ontario Community Newspaper Associa- tion's Better Newspapers Competition Fri- day (Apr. 23). The veteran photojournalist won Best Spot News photo for his dramatic image of firefighters rescuing a dog from a steep embankment along the Sixteen Mile Creek Trail. "Wow. Impact! This is how to tell a story with an image," wrote the judge. Paine also secured first in the Best Fea- ture Photo category for a captivating shot of paddlers on Sixteen Mile Creek, which the judge recognized for its "superb qual- ity" -- adding that the decision to photo- graph the paddlers from above and thus capture the sun reflecting off the water was well thought out. The Oakville Beaver placed second in the General Excellence 45,000 and up cir- culation class. The judge noted its crisp, clean overall look and strong photos. Reporter Kathy Yanchus took third in the Health and Wellness category for her Oakville Beaver story on an Oakville cou- ple's plight with dementia. This image took first-place honours in the Better Newspapers Competition awards. Graham Paine/Metroland OAKVILLE BEAVER PHOTOS TOP OCNA AWARDS NEWS PLEASE RECYCLE THIS PAPER
