13 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,F ebruary 11,2021 insidehalton.com KSM Youth Program is Here to Help With our youth heading back to school this week many may be facing a tough reality. Online learning hasn't been easy for them and a lot of students are falling behind. The KSM Youth Program wants parents and youth to know that they are here to help in any way: tutors, homework help or anything else. Recently our youth team, Tim and Kyle, helped a student that was failing two classes. The student kept missing handing in the assignments given each day and online learning wasn't working for them. Their mom reached out and Kyle stepped in to help take the load off mom's shoulders and to "be the bad guy." He helped the student catch up on work, ate Popeye Chicken sandwiches and had heart to hearts. The student caught up and now has a great support system with our program. We are here to help, if you or a youth you know is struggling with school, life anything please reach out for help. Even if they aren't struggling yet, prevention is the best safeguard, especially during a pandemic. In recognition of Black History Month (February), the Halton District School Board has several virtual events planned. "Black History Month is a time to com- memorate the important achievements and contributions of Black Canadians, not just here in Canada but around the world," says Stuart Miller, HDSB's direc- tor of education. "This month provides our educators another opportunity to teach and discuss the strength, resilience and excellence of the Black Community, as well as the ex- tensive role Black Canadians have had in the shaping and growth of this country. Students and staff will examine and learn that, as a result of existing systemic rac- ism, the struggle for equality and human rights continues, and that we all have a re- sponsibility to take an anti-racist stance." Some of the planned events include: • International spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan will address the theme of 'Black Excellence' via presentations to Grade 6-12 students on Feb. 11, 17 and 18. • Natasha Henry, President of Ontario Black History Society , will give two pre- sentations to HDSB staff members: Feb. 16, addressing anti-Black racism and cur- rent realities of Black Canadians; and Feb. 22, addressing how this learning im- pacts schools and classrooms. • Computer Technology students in the virtual school - secondary will create group presentations that explore 7 Black Pioneers in Computer Science and their influence on computer technologies to- day. • Students in the virtual school elemen- tary - east will be partnering with Inspira- tion Republic on a workshop to address anti-Black racism. Students will also be creating a virtual wall of 40 Black Canadi- an heroes. SCHOOL BOARD CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH Here is what you need to know about this year's Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser being organized in Oakville: 1.) There are two CNOY events in Oak- ville: the Oakville South Central walk hosted by Links2Care, an organization that connects those in need to the basic ne- cessities of life, helps seniors and those with disabilities maintain their indepen- dence and fosters early learning and de- velopment for children. 2.) The Oakville North walk is being hosted by Front Line Outreach. Proceeds will go toward funding low-income chil- dren and youth for Camp Dakota, as well as ongoing youth programs. 3.) The event will be a COVID-19-safe, family-friendly walk on Feb. 20. 4.) Money raised will go to charities that serve people who are homeless, hun- gry or hurting. 5.) Participants will self-organize indi- vidually or in team bubbles and select their own 2-to-5-km route. 6.) There is no registration fee this year. 7.) While you are encouraged to walk on the national event day, virtual fund- raisers can select any day in February to walk. 8.) The idea behind CNOY is to allow participants to have a small taste of what it's like to be homeless. 9.) Over the past 10 years, Coldest Night of the Year has raised more than $33 mil- lion in 149 Canadian communities. 10.) For more information or to regis- ter, go to www.cnoy.org/locations. 10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CNOY VIRTUAL WALK NEWS The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser is switching to a virtual walk this year.
