The Animal Rescue Ex- press trailer was bought last fall with a $100,000 donation from Pet Valu. Designed to comfortably transport ani- mals, it's equipped with air conditioning in the summer and a heat in the winter. "It's really an all-season vehicle," said Liam Cullin, executive director of the North Bay and District Hu- mane Society. The humane society ser- vices as a "midway point" for animals rescued in northern Ontario and then taken to places throughout the prov- ince for adoption. Cullin said it's not unusu- al for humane societies in southern Ontario to call, saying they have no cats for adoption. While there were plenty up north needing homes, the challenge was transferring the animals. The North Bay humane society was limited to the number of homeless pets it could help with smaller ve- hicles making multiple trips. The trailer changes that equation. A load of 75 cats was tak- en to humane societies in Guelph and Toronto earlier this year, and about 400 ani- mals have been transported since last fall. They're seen by a vet for general health, up-to-date vaccinations and are spayed or neutered. That's included in the adoption fee of $190 for cats, $290 for large dogs, $390 for puppies or small-breed dogs, and senior cats are dis- counted at $95. Brooks is looking for- ward to the animal express pulling up to his store. Adop- tion kits will be available to buy with all the supplies needed. People eager for a furry companion won't have a long wait, he said.
