The Crown and defence are expected to deliver clos- ing arguments to the jury later this week. That will be followed by Justice Joseph Henderson's instructions to the jury, expected as early as next week. Then the jury will begin deliberations. Ball, 27, of Kitchener has pleaded not guilty to first- degree murder in the death of Erin Howlett, 28, of Elmi- ra on June 27, 2013. Her body was found in a duffel bag on July 5, 2013, in the Grand River near the Wal- ter Bean Trail in Kitchener. Ball and Howlett had previ- ously dated. Ball's first trial, in Kitch- ener, ended three years ago with the jury unable to reach a verdict. The retrial was moved to St. Catha- rines to find a jury that knows nothing about the case. Ball did not take the stand at the retrial. "He's not required to tes- tify - he's presumed inno- cent," defence lawyer Tony Bryant told the jury earlier this month. Bryant noted that the ju- ry had actually already heard from Ball, through interviews he gave to the police. Several men who spent time with Howlett in the days and weeks before her death were scheduled to take the stand to provide "a more fulsome picture, if you will, of what was going on in her life," Bryant said. "Now, we expect you'll hear about what's been de- scribed as partying, drug consumption and drinking, all of this that Erin Howlett was engaged in throughout June of 2013, right up until she went missing," he told the jury. The Crown called more than 40 witnesses to the stand. LOCAL MURDER RETRIAL FOR KITCHENER'S MICHAEL BALL WINDING DOWN Erin Howlett YOUR city YOUR news also available online
