The Musical For the fourth year straight, a small, quiet res- taurant in uptown Waterloo has been named one of Cana- da's most romantic. King Street Trio UpTown, located at 40 King St. S. on the south end of uptown Water- loo, was named Canada's most romantic restaurants by OpenTable, an online res- ervation system that uses da- ta from thousands of diners to determine the best in vari- ous categories. The 68-seat, 2,500-square- foot restaurant, which opened in uptown in 2011, is admittedly quiet about what it does. But what happens within the walls speaks for it- self, says Brian Plouffe, the restaurant's owner. "What a lot of people say is those who know, know," said Plouffe, adding that after more than 10 years in busi- ness, King Street Trio has gained widespread atten- tion. On top of being named one of the most romantic, the restaurant was also distin- guished as one of the top 100 restaurants in Canada in 2018 and 2017, according to OpenTable. On the platform, King Street Trio has a 4.8 rat- ing. With chef Kyle Rennie leading the charge in the kitchen, King Street Trio fo- cuses on a fresh, local menu that changes often. Plus, un- like many fine dining estab- lishments, King Street Trio offers generous portions, which provides more value for customers. "We're a small operation very focused on what we do," said Plouffe. The restaurant employs 15 staff members, five of which are full-time. And after two years of hindered business due to LRT and streetscape con- struction in uptown Water- loo, Plouffe is finally seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. tion to the team because he understands what I'm trying to do. We're trying to deliver a great dine-in experience," said Plouffe. The restaurant recently added locally-sourced beef from the Georgian Bay area that is hormone and antibiot- ic free. After more than 20 years personally in the restaurant business - as a former area manager for The Keg Steak- house and Bar - Plouffe real- ized that dining establish- ments can't be all things to all people.
