The cuts are in special- ized programs for which two local school boards expected to receive a total of $4.1 mil- lion during this school year. "I can advise that some grants were untouched, some discontinued, and some we will need to work with the ministry to better understand the changes," said Shesh Maharaj, trea- surer of the Waterloo Catho- lic District School Board. An example: Catholic schools expected to receive $108,000 this year to fund in- novative learning. The board has been spending this money in part to buy classroom technology. "This funding is no lon- ger available so we will need to assess what change we need to make moving for- ward," Maharaj said. Other examples of affect- ed programs include fund- ing for literacy, math, hands- on learning, and mental health supports, he said. The Ministry of Educa- tion "had signalled to boards that all of these targeted grants were under review," Maharaj said. The province told boards late Friday of the cuts, reportedly estimated at $25 million across the prov- ince. "At this point, we are not sure what these reductions look like for Waterloo Re- gion District School Board," said Matthew Gerard, trea- surer of the public school board. A government document shows that the funding pro- gram targeted by the gov- ernment of Premier Doug Ford helps local schools pro- vide hands-on learning and support for Indigenous stu- dents. It provides support for mathematics, for the community use of schools, and for mental health work- ers in schools. The province is spending almost $1 billion on local schools this year. More to come. LOCAL SCHOOLS TALLY PROVINCIAL FUNDING CUTS School boards in Waterloo Region are studying the impact of provincial cuts to funding for student programs that were announced late Friday.
