R 00 13 98 45 75 KITCHENER - A local startup is among the top winners in a global pitch competition. When Dozr was accept- ed into the VentureClash contest in March about 40 early stage companies from around the world were competing for US$5 million in prizes. Nine made it to the final pitch held at the Yale School of Management in Connecticut. Dozr placed second, winning US$1 mil- lion. "It was a pretty amazing experience, really great networking," said CEO Kevin Forestell, who founded Dozr in 2015 with Erin Stephenson and Tim Forestell. Dozr developed a plat- form that enables owners of construction equipment to earn money from idle equipment by renting it out, and contractors to rent equipment at affordable rates. Forestell said the win- nings will be used to hire more software developers experienced in artificial in- telligence and machine learning. With automation, Dozr significantly expan- ded its business using a smaller workforce, and it wants to double down on that, said Forestell. The company will also open a sales and marketing office in Connecticut. "It is a great idea to have some people close to the market and the projects that are happening, who are able to reach out and speak to contractors on their level," said Forestell. "Throughout 2019 and 2020 we definitely plan on continuing to ex- pand throughout the U.S." Dozr, which will keep its headquarters in a building on Duke Street in Kitchener, has expanded rapidly. "As of July we hit our big- gest month ever in rentals," said Forestell. "And every month since it has contin- ued to grow. "We are super excited over here," he said. "Things are really, really taking off here for Dozr." Toronto-based venture capitalists recommended Dozr to the VentureClash competition. It found itself competing against startups from Israel, Ireland and the U.S. VentureClash is a Con- necticut-based economic development program fo- cused on startups in finan- cial services, insurance, health care and the internet of things. The final pitch competi- tion was held in front of 400 people, including industry experts, customers, inves- tors and university faculty. tpender@therecord.com Twitter: @PenderRecord KITCHENER'S DOZR WINS $1 MILLION IN U.S. PITCH CONTEST TERRY PENDER tpender@therecord.com BUSINESS
