MP1368 (10/2007) Principal CFP, CPCA, CDFA, RRC A dedicated group of local volunteers have come to- gether to create https://Wa- terlooRegionVotes.org, a one stop voting information spot. With this helpful website, it is easy to become engaged with the Waterloo Region municipal election on Mon- day October 22, 2018. "Only about one-third of people cast a vote in munici- pal elections," says co-found- er of CivicTechWR Kristina Taylor. "Municipal politics affects your life far more than any other level of gov- ernment which is why we are aiming to get more people en- gaged and out to the polls with waterlooregionvote- s.org." People express that they struggle with municipal elec- tions because they don't know where to go to find in- formation on the candidates or don't understand how mu- nicipal governance affects their daily lives. The reality is, municipal government is fundamental- ly important and has more of an impact on how cities and townships are shaped than are other levels of govern- ment. However, voting mu- nicipally is all too often over- looked. Bike lanes, garbage col- lection, safe injection sites, shelters, and program fund- ing are only a few of the mat- ters managed by municipal government. "Our regional govern- ment structure means that voters can be easily over- whelmed at the ballot box," says Robert J. Williams, Pro- fessor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Waterloo and a specialist in Canadian municipal govern- ment and politics. "Having a one-stop-shop for candidate information and events can help people make an in- formed decision on October 22." WaterlooRegionVotes.org has compiled candidate list- ings, events, news articles, and more into one easy to navigate website. Learning about the election and mak- ing an informed decision based on where you live in Waterloo Region is one click away. Voters no longer have to feel overwhelmed by the complexities of voting mu- nicipally. Individuals are encour- aged to contribute election content to produce a more comprehensive website by emailing the municipal elec- tion website team at civic- techwr.wrvotes@gmail.com.
