The former executive di- rector of the Waterloo-Wel- lington Integrated Health Network has officially filed her nomination to run at councillor in Ward 1, the most hotly contested ward so far. "I've lived in Ward 1 for 26 years now and I thought it was time to give back," said Hanmer, who currently works as an executive in residence at Capacity Cana- da, an incubator for non- profit startups. "Giving back and ensuring that our community is a vibrant community is important to me." Hanmer is a mother of four as well. Hanmer said she's ener- gized by the excitement and engagement shown by resi- dents and she wants to be part of it. "I want to be part of that as the community grows," said Hanmer. Hanmer is one of four registered candidates for Ward 1, currently held by Coun. Bob Mavin. Mavin confirmed that he will not seek re-election due to health issues that caused him to miss a chunk of time during the last term. Robert Parent, Adam McCarthy and Leia Lei have also regis- tered as candidates. So far, Ward 1 and Ward 7, the uptown ward, have the most candidates at four apiece. "The neighbourhood as- sociations in Ward 1 are very, very strong," said Hanmer, adding that they provide an opportunity for neighbours to connect. Hanmer added that the neighbourhood associa- tions have a strong connec- tion with council and she hopes to use that to the ad- vantage of both sides in the future. "That way we can get the opinions, ideas and sugges- tions forward. They're a hid- den gem so far," said Han- mer. As for intensification, which has been a hot topic in Beechwood because of a proposed 13-storey develop- ment on Beechwood Drive, Hanmer said intensifica- tion is part of way forward, but the city needs to look at what makes sense for the different communities. "In uptown Waterloo, it may make sense to put high towers in that area, but in other neighbourhoods, like Ward 1, they may look for something that is lower and fits better with the system that's already in the neigh- bourhood."
