MP1368 (10/2007) Principal CFP, CPCA, CDFA, RRC It's time again for one of those columns in which I throw a bunch of ran- dom thoughts against the wall to see which ones stick. Or as they say in 12 An- gry Men: "Let's fly it up the flagpole and see if any- one salutes." Thanks for the memo- ries There's never been anything fake about Bob Vrbanac - personally or professionally. And he certainly hasn't been an enemy of the people. In fact, he's been anything but. My dealings with Bob have only been profes- sional - as my editor - but I've had the opportunity to get to know him some- what on a personal level through conversations on the phone, in the office of the Chronicle on those rare occasions I dropped in, or during an un- planned meetup at some local sporting event. Like many of you, I've also gotten to know him through his writing - as a reporter, a columnist and an editor. It was Bob who gave me a chance to pretend to be a journalist of sorts by writ- ing this freelance sports column for the last num- ber of years. It was Bob who recom- mended me to the now de- funct Waterloo-Welling- ton FYI Magazine so I could spread my writing wings for a few years in areas other than athlet- ics. And it was Bob who al- lowed me to test myself as an editorial page colum- nist for a time while Brian Bourke was running for office. On that last venture, I quickly found out for my- self that you can take the boy out of sports but you can't take sports out of the boy and I requested a re- turn to my comfy corner in the back pages with those of my sporting ilk. As Bob heads out the door(s) of both the Water- loo Chronicle and the Kitchener Post, I'd simply like to say "thanks" for al- lowing me to be part of the K-W conversation. A small fish in a small (but important) pond, as it were. Thanks, Bob, for being so supportive. Thanks for being an excellent sounding board when needed. And most of all, thanks for all that you've given to our community with your dedication and journalis- tic skill; your point of view and professional- ism; and most of all - your passion for all things Kitchener-Waterloo. You did matter. You did make a difference. And you will be missed. Going to the shootout I'm really torn on the issue of overtime shoo- touts in sports. I know that in hockey, I really don't like it. I'd much rather see them de- cide the issue with contin- ued ice time - even if it in- volves tweaking things by going 4-on-4 or whatever. Travel plans be damned. However, in soccer - and make no mistake, I am not a soccer guy - I cannot decide whether I think penalty kicks are awful or awesome. On one hand, it's a su- perficial and contrived way to decide a World Cup match. On the other hand, the drama and tension is off the charts. Maybe I lean toward it in this case because the beautiful game has fewer shots on net and fewer goals compared to the game of hockey. Then suddenly - a flurry of ac- tion and adrenalin. I don't know, count me as undecided. Here come the Leafs I've mentioned before that even as a Habs fan, I enjoy seeing the Leafs do well. (My fellow Canadiens fans will consider this blasphemy but let's be honest -- a competitive franchise in hockey-mad Toronto is great for the game.) So I was actually quite happy to see the Buds land John Tavares - al- most as happy as I was to see the daily "Tavares Watch" updates finally end. My question is: Has enough been made of the loss of James van Riems- dyk and his 36 goals? JT had 37. - Brian Totzke is a freelance writer who is putting this column on the back stoop to see if the cat licks it up.
