Region of Waterloo chief administrative officer Mike Murray confirmed Wednesday night that the second site - one of the two labelled as feasible in Kitchener - is not available. Its location had not been re- vealed, as the landlord was not available for approval. That leaves 115 Water St. N. as the only proposed Kitchener location, al- though during the next stage of the process, more potential locations may be- come available. "I do want to emphasize that we are open to other potential sites during this examination period," said Regional Chair Ken Seil- ing. Murray said the region will put in a process where members of the public or community organizations can recommend locations that will be investigated. "Since the committee meeting, regional staff, in consultation with city staff, are turning our minds to what the process would look like given the direction from committee and from council. The cur- rent working concept is that the region would put in place a process to be open to and invite interest- ed community organiza- tions or members of the community who have sug- gestions for potential loca- tions to bring those for- ward," said Murray. Choosing the correct lo- cation has proven to be a struggle for regional staff. A working group started off with more than 20 can- didate locations in both Kitchener and the Galt ar- ea of Cambridge - two of the areas with the highest overdose rate - and from that list, only a total of four were deemed acceptable. According to provincial and federal requirements, the locations must be in ar- eas that have proven high levels of drug use and they must meet strict criteria. On top of that, the location must be available for rent for the purpose of a super- vised consumption site. The process of investi- gating supervised injection sites - which has since turned into supervised consumption sites - started more than a year ago, after the region experienced re- cord-level fatal and non-fa- tal overdoses, mostly as a result of opioid use. An estimated 85 people died from overdoses in Wa- terloo Region in 2017.
