CHECK OUT MLS 30655615 tion," said Fife. "We really just tried to stay positive with our platform." Fife said it is "unfortu- nate" that the Progressive Conservative will have a majority government, but she pledged to continue to fight against the "regres- sive" PC party platform. "We are going to fight ev- ery single day for the people in this province," said Fife. Fife also criticized Ford as a leader. "This is a leader that has been talking in bumper sticker slogans for the en- tire election," said Fife. "I honestly never thought a premier would be elected without every put- ting forward a platform or a plan," said Fife. "It's a dis- turbing trend and I'm genu- inely concerned about that. In Kitchener-Centre, Laura Mae Lindo was out to an early lead, which set the tone for the rest of the in- coming polls. Lindo, an eq- uity and diversity official at Wilfrid Laurier University, went on to win the seat for the NDP for the first time since Willy Ferguson won the riding for the NDP and the Bob Rae government. Lindo, who won the Kitchener-Centre seat by more than 7,000 votes, said the partnership between her riding and Fife's Water- loo riding will strengthen the community's voice at Queen's Park. "It strengthens the com- mitment that we have. We're already working col- laboratively to begin with," said Lindo, noting the simi- larities in issues between Kitchener-Centre and Wa- terloo. "Catherine has been fighting for ages and this is just strengthening that commitment and bringing us together." Just after 10 p.m., Kitche- ner-Centre MPP arrived at La Cucina in downtown Kitchener to greet volun- teers and make her conces- sion speech. In her speech, Vernile, the outgoing minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, said people liked Lib- eral policies going door to door. "So, we put all of this in front of people and yet we have the results we have to- night," she said. "I think there was some vote split- ting. "The one thing I did hear over and over again at the door was the fear of Doug Ford. People did not want to see him in power, so in Kitchener Centre you had a choice between Liberal and NDP." Vernile said she's going to take time before contem- plating next steps for her- self, only saying that she in- tends to spend more time with her husband John. She encourage her support- ers to look forward and not back. "We have a very invig- orating task ahead of us. We're going to be rebuilding and now more than ever we're going to need your strength, energy and smarts "And, four years ahead I want to see all you again." The closest race came in the Kitchener-Conestoga riding as it came down to the final two polls before Mike Harris Jr. defeated NDP candidate Kelly Dick. It was a small, but spir- ited party in St. Jacobs as Kitchener-Conestoga con- servative MPP Mike Harris edged out the NDP's Kelly Dick. The crowd erupted as the news flashed across the screen around 10:50 p.m. that Harris had won the rid- ing by 686 votes in what is normally a safe Conserva- tive riding. "I'm ecstatic, this is very exciting, I'm really looking forward to the next four years, really looking for- ward to the next four years at Queen's Park, and ready to get rolling," said Harris Jr. Harris entered the race after replacing incumbent Michael Harris, who was removed from his post after allegations of sexual impro- priety that proved to have little merit. It prompted the question of whether not Harris Jr. won it on his own accord or because he was hand-picked by Ford to run and trade in on the well known Harris name. "I don't know if I'd use the word parachuted, I only live two minutes from the riding, it's been tough," said Harris Jr. "It's been tough for sure. Obviously the me- dia's been a little unkind in the last few weeks. "You know what, we had a great win tonight, and I'm looking forward to re- presenting Kitchener-Con- estoga." Harris' father, Mike Har- ris Sr, who was premier of Ontario from 1995-2002, was in attendance for his 33- year-old son's victory speech, which took place in front of about 70 supporters at Cellar 52 in St. Jacobs.
