MP1368 (10/2007) Principal CFP, CPCA, CDFA, RRC Another notable Onta- rio election campaign has concluded. The focus at the end was not who was the best party or person to run Ontario, but rather is a ma- jority or minority govern- ment more effective. The voters provided de- cisive decisions on both questions. Our chamber hosted candidate forums in the lo- cal ridings of Kitchener South-Hespeler, Kitche- ner-Conestoga, Waterloo and Kitchener Centre. If you weren't able to attend, hopefully you had the op- portunity to view the tap- ings which ran frequently on Rogers Waterloo Region TV over the week leading up to the vote. Fortunately, as reports surfaced across the prov- ince regarding candidates from major parties skip- ping these events, all 16 rep- resentatives of the four ma- jor parties who were invit- ed attended. Local radio personality Jeff Pickel did an excellent job of moder- ating and keeping the de- bate on a highly civil and respectful level. The agenda included questions on what we tra- ditionally consider busi- ness issues but there were also excellent debates on social assistance, social housing and health care. A local service provider asked us to secure respons- es from the candidates on the need for better dental programs. Initiatives to as- sist small businesses were also a major area of atten- tion. What was impressive was that local candidates spoke freely and indepen- dently for their constituen- cies. The central cam- paigns for the parties pre- pare detailed briefing bind- ers for debates which provide the party positions on all major issues. Howev- er, on local concerns such as transit and housing, candidates were prepared to advance the opinions of voters they had been talk- ing with over the past month. The remark "I heard this at the door" was fre- quent and shows a commit- ment to our community that probably is not evident everywhere in Ontario. At the conclusion of one of our events, an attendee thanked a chamber staff person for organizing the debate on behalf of the community. He noted that social media and other campaign material does not contain the detail on policy positions that many voters are seeking to make informed decisions, and debates such as ours allow for that process to occur. Our congratulations are extended to the successful local candidates after an intense four-week cam- paign and we look forward to working with you. For political junkies and policy wonks across Onta- rio, the municipal election date of Oct. 22 is fast ap- proaching. The next feder- al vote is one year later. - Ian McLean is president and CEO of the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Cham- ber of Commerce.
