As though in answer to a veiled challenge, came the opening of the all-British trans-Atlantic telephone service between Canada, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, on July 11th, less than six months later and ten days in advance of the inaugural ceremonies of the Imperial Economic Conference at Ottawa. It is interesting to note that during the month's sessions of the Conference some 120 out-going and 50 in-coming trans-Atlantic calls were completed via this all-British route. ' Hers again, was an achievement in British co-operation. By agreement between the Bell Telephone Company, Canadian Marconi and the British Post Office, Montreal and London, on their respective sides of the Atlantic, became the clearing-houses for trans-oceanic telephone talks that span the broad Atlantic, by wireless. beam, with the speed of light. . Telephone land-line circuits transport the voices from Montreal and London to the radio transmitting and receiving stations at Drummondville, Bladock, Yamachiche and Rugby, re-| spectively. - In addition, the telephone apparatus and its associated equip- ment, include some of the latest devices for the successful sending and receipt of trans-oceanic conversations. Outstanding among these is the special "Privacy Equipment" that adjoins the trans- Atlantic control switchboard in the particular room set aside for this service in the Bell Telephone Company's Long Distance Centre i | on Belmont Street, adjacent to the Beaver Hall Building. = This Privacy Equipment is employed on all commercial trans- B| oceanic telephone conversations in order that the electrical im- Bi | pulses set up by the voice may not be intercepted intelligibly by radio users whose sets may be operating on a similar frequency. One of the most significant of the many inventions in the modern communication field, this telephone privacy apparatus is in opera- m | tion for the duration of every trans-Atlantic telephone conversa- tion, except in the case of some talks between the trans-Atlantic technicians and other operatives at their respective sides of the ocean while the voice-paths are being lined up prior to the place- ment of a commercial call. HEE - British trans-Atlantic telephone service, with its privacy equip- 'ment, there have been several other important features of tele- phone progress thus far in the current year. Six more ocean passenger liners have been completely telephone-equipped, bring- ing the total up to thirteen. In the same period since the first of this year, Egypt, South Africa, the Hawaiian Islands, the States of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and, most recently, Peru have been brought into the ever-expanding chain of Bell Telephone long distance contacts. Briefly, this means that close to 33,000,000 telephones or nearly 92 per cent. of the world's total, are now inter-communicating throughout the Bell System. Speed of service has been improved to a marked degree, with present figures revealing that all long distance connections are completed in an average of 1.8 minutes. More than 93 per cent. of all out- of-town calls are completed, 90 per cent. of these connections being established while the person calling remains at the tele- phone. Maintenance continues to receive its important share of telephone interest, recent reports showing that Bell Telephones in Quebec and Ontario are now free from trouble of any kind for 29 months on the average. One of the most remarkable points about Bell Telephone con- tact inl Ontario and Quebec is its low cost, the lowest in the world for comparable service, -- lubricating Phone 30, re A Savings Account and its 4 selling points AFETY--Hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of conservatively valued bank assets ensure the safety of your deposits.
