Ford Car Ran into Shunting Engine , at Myrtle Station Man Badly Injured On Wednesday afternoon, a Ford car traveling south ran into a shunt- ing engine on the C. P. R. tracks at Myrtle Station. At the time of the accident the engine and tender were only travelling about five miles an hour. Apparently the brakes on the Ford car were not operating properly, and the driver lost control of the auto with the result that it ran into the engine and was badly wrecked. There were four occupants in the car, which came" from Belleville. They were: Albert Clapper, Belleville; Fay Clapper, Belleville;John Elliott, Belleville; Mrs. Hinds, Corbyville. Albert Clapper was very badly cut about the face and head and a hurry call was sent in for the ambulance. He was brought to Port Perry where he was attended by Drs. Jeffrey & Rennie, and is now in the Port Perry Hospital. Others of the group have | broken ribs and other injuries. Dr.| Mathers was also in attendance. rt eet @ pe ee New Registrar for Ontario County? DR. JAS. MOORE IS MENTIONED AS NEW REGISTRAR j (Oshawa Daily Times) Much conjecture and speculation has been rife throughout the county during the last few days as to the probable appointee to the position of Registrar of Deeds for the County of Ontario, at Whitby, which was rend- ered vacant through the death of George W. Dryden, on April 9th. Although no a t has been made by Premier Henry and his cabinet, the name of Dr. James Moore of Brooklin, is prominently mentioned for the position. -Dr. Moore who is one of the best known physicians in 'this riding, has practised for over twenty-five years in Brooklin and has been actively asociated with the Liberal-Conservative Agsocfation of South Ontario; and filled the position of president of the iation for a Dr. T. E. Kaiser, ex-M.P., when estioned by The Times this week, that he had heard of no appoint- as yet, and surmised that it be made at the next cabinet eting. ~~ Several applications had he said, but he agreed Times that Dr. Moore would for the post. Burton Dies at Virden (Virden News) People generally of Woodnorth and Virden learned with deep regret of the passing of Joseph W. Burton, aged 74 years, who died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Wm. Burton, Virden, Man, on Sunday afternoon, April 5th. For a year or more Mr. Burton has not enjoyed good health but seemed quite a lot better when seen just a short time ago. He was a particularly fine type of citizen, well informed, industrious and dependable. His life was characterized by a spirit of kindly thoughtfulness for others, evidenced by quiet, kindly thoughts and acts. He never made a great show but we believe the world is better for his having lived. He was 4 worthy friend and this is saying much in these days of strife. Where he was best known he will be missed most. Mr. Burton was the pioneer lumber merchant of Woodnorth, and for 24 years he took an active part in the life of the community where he oper- ated a farm before and since he operated the lumber yard. He was a member of the United Church and was a lifelong supporter of the Conservative policies in politics. The remains were forwarded to his old home at Port Perry, Ont., for in- terment Tuesday morning, following a service in St. Paul's United Church, Virden, conducted by Rev. D. H. Tel- fer and Rev. Mr. Wishart, assisted by the choir of Woodnorth United Church. The church was filled with Woodnorth and Virden friends. Deceased is survived by two brothers, Mr. E. €. Burton, Port Perry; Rev. R. C. Burton, Toronto; and three sisters, Mrs. W. J. Coultis, Port Perry; Mrs. Bryant, Oshawa; Mrs. Love, Niagara. Funeral service here was held at the home of Mr. Wilmot Walker, on Saturday, April 11th, conducted by Rev. R. T. Richards, assisted by Rev. C. E. Dyer and Rev. Mr. Merriam. Floral tributes were received from the West, including one from the Virden United Church, and several from friends at home. "When the golden gates of glory Stands ajar across the tide, We shall find our brother waiting To receive us at his side." es eee Pe BETTER ENGLISH Being interested in the subject of 'Better Spoken English', I keep look- ing for articles on dialects and ver- naculars of the different parts of this country and of our various homelands and their effects on our local lan- guage. For instance, where do wa get "yah" for yes? Is it from our German fellow-vitizens or German ancestors perhaps, And on whom can we blame 'yap' for yes? Where do we get "ya" for you? 'And'--has several ways of being pronounced. The following are some--'andum', 'an', 'und' and even 'ant'. I know a teacher who always says 'ant' for and. While speaking about pronuncia- tions, may I mention 'windy' and 'winder' for window; 'apern' for apron; 'childern' for children; 'jist" or 'dist' for just? I was very puz- zled when a pupil's father asked to see the book ("00" pronounced as in fool) meaning the register. He wished to see his fond hope's attendance. It was time, too, for this parent to take an intelligent interest in the subject. Sometimes we hear pull called pool; pour called poor and poor called pore. Sometimes the Moore family are classed as the Mores; the Reynolds are Raynoldses; * the Grahams are Grames, and Walls are Wallges. It seems to me that being truly observant of our own speech and the speech of those we hear in whom we may have complete confidence, is the very best means of improving our own. This is the one great way in which talkies, radios, sermons. lec- tures, plays and conversation, can help to improve the spoken language ot our own land. t : EASTER EXAMINATION REPORT PORT PERRY HIGH SCHOOL Upper School DAVIA DOWSOD.. ovr srsisnsssas 80 vorothy saltour .....
