A new kind of coalwhich, it is claimed, will rid manufacturing cities of the smoke nuisance, eliminate stok- ers and clinkers and solve the rapid depletion of the world's coal supply, was described yesterday. Powdered or pulverized coal is the latest thing in fuel, according to Pro- fessor Christie, who passed a small bottle of the substance among the students for inspection. The coal is as soft as talcum powder and floats when blown into the air. The coal is first dried and then ground to such fineness that it will pass through a 200-mesh sieve," Pro- fessor Christie declared. "To pass through such a sieve the coal must be ground to two-thousandths of an inch in diameter. "It cost approximately 80 cents a ton to turn bituminous coal into a powder form by drying and grinding and about 50 cents a ton for anthra- cite coal. "The advantage of powdered coal are well worth the additional expense of preparation. When powdered coal . | is used in power plants one boiler does easily the work of two. We have discovered the efficiency of a ton of powdered coal to be between 86 and 92 per cent." Professor Christie said powdered coal was handled in Los Angeles in tank cars in the same manner that oil is transported. He affirms that coal with a high amount of slate in its composition can be utilized readily in the manufacture of powdered coal, 80 that this will take care of the fact that the quality of coal is becoming coarser each year. : x Plants for the conversion of coal to a powdered form are being erected in Milwaukee, St. Louis, Cleveland, De- troit, Pittsburg and Toronto, Profes- begin operation on a large scale they will be able to produce a daily output of 8000 tons of powdered coal. "Banking of fires will be unneces- sary when powdered coal is run into furnaces through chutes," Professor Christie said. "If proper precautions are not taken powdered coal will ig- nite by spontaneous combustion in a dry climate. For this reason convert- ing plants contain no surfaces or edges on which coal dust may collect being cleaned by a gigantic vacuum cleaner."
