Fr 18, 1866, 193m to announce that it is my determination to Present myself as seh in Sumplianes with | their In appealing to yowtor yon suffrages, 1 base my claims for the merits' of my public course time [ have held a seat in the Council. ~By these [ am' willing to stand or fall--you being the judges. Iam confident you will bear me out in the assertion that I have always endeavored to keep low; sala- ries of officials in to the labor rformed ; and to promote the interests of the Municipality in general. My opponent, Mr. Ji Wright, taking oppo by the foreloek," some weeks ago distributed a nnmber of placards charging me with not using fair means in the contest; but this is only an illustration of the old' adage that "fear is the com- jon of guilt" Mr. Wright, has manu- tured statements purporting to come from me, which I never made, and then goes on to clear his character trom the to myself, | He accuses me with endorsing privately and publicly," the sentiments of others ; and winds up in his usual unseémly style by pronouncing me guilty of falsehood. Now I distinctly affirm that I have not attempted to obtain any support or favor at Mr. Wright's expense, as he asserts, by cir- culating 'groundless fabrications" con- cerning him. I am willing 'to allow him, as every other. man, all the advantages which his true character or standing may give him ; bat in this case I am urged by his personalities thus publicly to allude A him, He appears indignant at me because some of the Electors charge him: with being a Railroad man--a fact that can be established by indubitable evidence, he having been at public and private meetings, assisting in schemes for its construction. In view of this, Mr. Wright's denial of the imputation is of the most barefaced description. But he shows a still greater disregard of moral honesty, and confidence in his ability to gull the public on this point, by assuming that Iam in favor of direct taxation for a Rail- road becadse I receive the support of Port Perry. Now if a man is invariably to be judged by the company in which he is found, what of Mr. Wright's association with Mr. Major, who is an ardent and avowed sup- porter of that measure? If Mr. "Wright tan wriggle out of this Jilemisa ke is possessed of greater flexibil- and cunning than is generally supposed, By and his notoriety, in these particulars, is already far from enviable. 'Mr, Wright evidently iinagines that his edifice, if built at all, must be built on the ruins of mine; but the very means he employs are those he dreads the most. I distinctly state that the contemplated Taz for Railroad purposes will not be imposed on this Township by any Vote of mine--my opponent's insinualiion to the contrary notwithstanding. Every 'Elector who takes any interest in Township affairs must remember that in 1865 Mr. Wright voted in favor of .direct taxation to the amount of $500, for the purpose of erecting a drill-shed in Prince Albert ; and that in 1866, he again, with Mr. Major, was in favor of the same scheme, with the addition of the purchase of a plot of ground on which to erect it. By care and watchfulness, however, on the part of Mr. Campbell and myself, the sheds was eventually built at a cost of but $200 to the Township, the G a like GOOD NEWS!
