PORT PERRY, SEPT. 27, 1394. A Standard Bearer Gone. Tn the death of A. W. Ewers, which 0 place at his home at Manchester, ago Mr, A. W Ewers moved a into the township of Reach, relecting Manchester a to his farm adjoining the taenly be ally iden good Orr Graham, 20d hes ever had. From his first en-| ond Ward ed the Noa aia ull comers to' do battle for the peoples rights. He did not mince matters but called things by their right ntme. He was an honor- able opponent and a severe onw, but like & trae hero he never winced at taking such wedicive as he gave. To Mr. Ewers' diplomacy, good judgment and euterprise the northern part of this county is indebted for that splendid high way the Centre road, and while the public continue to travel it aud en- joy its many advantages the memory of us promuter, A. W, Ewers will be re- called with pleasing reflection. Mr, Ewers was born under the ample when growing to early manhood he sought a howe under the Union Jack in fuir and free Canada, locating in Whitby, where he carried on the busi- ness of carriage builder. He secured 200 acres of land in the County of Outario and moved back into Reach about half a century ago taking up his residence at Manchester, where he re- sided up to the time of his decease. Mr. Ewers and family were in com fortable circumstances secured by his own careful management, by the thrift and good management of an intelligent and devoted wife gpd by the combined efforts of a highly © intelligent and in- dustrions Ack hha ie Rap pred ie Eo ful, as n end courteous and oblig- ing. The fair held here on the latter part | of last week was worthy of more than | a passing notice, many of the depart- ments were of especinl excellence. It is said that "a thing of beauty is a joy for ever" and the Floral display on that occasion was of rare beauty and quite extensive and proved a popular centre of attraction. The principal ex- hibitors were Mrs. Curts, Mrs. Willcox and Mr. Geo. Bond. The exhibits were 80 magnificent that each one of them deserved a first prize, Jones & Co. ever solicitous for the comfort and appearance of their fair | customers exhibited a magmficent dis- play of winter comforts in the newest styles of furs, mantles and other winter garments. The ladies gave them more than a passing inspection. J. Swan & Sons, showed a choice variety of their famous Cutters, Bug- gies, Wagons which secured a close in spection and pleasing comments from the crowds who inspected them. W. H. Clark's exhibit of Tinware | was very superior, his display of Stoves was something grand, his 'Happy Thought" Ranges and Base burners were special favorites and were highly praised by the throngs who crowded around them. T. H. Philp & Co's splendid exhibit of stoves and Tinware was very fine [and quite extensive, their two hand. some Steel Ranges were rare beauties, the entire display was creditable to the firm and was much admired. R. J. Bruce's display of Hardware, Silverware was highly creditable to the exhibitor. W. L Parrish had a choice exhibit of Hardware &e. Messrs Courtice & Jeffrey had a fine display of Harness, &c. The Cabinet Maker's department was well sustained and deservedly popular. The Drawing room, Dining room and Bed room suites exhibited hy W. J. Nott for the Jessop Co. was an important centre of attraction and was much admired. Mr. J. Notts display of furniture was highly creditable to the maker and was favorably commented on by the Inrge numbers who inspected it. Several fair ones who have not yet had any use for furniture showed by their ap proving remarks on the furniture dis- play that the time is not fur distant when they will be in the market for such things. Very many of the ladies were much interested in the Singer Sewing Machine as exhilnted by N. Griffin, of Uxbridge. The Live Stock department especially grand in quality bat light in quantity, most of the animals shown were prize takers at the late Tudastrial Exhibition at Toronto. Jas. Leask's exhibition of grade cattle fully sustained Mr. Leask's re- putation as a stock breeder by carrying off all the prizes in their class. The township of Cartwright Agri- cultural Society held their Fall Show for 1894, at Blackstock, on Monday and Tuesday, of the present week. Tuesday the principal day was in every way favorable and the exhibition proved « marked success in every particular. The quality of the exhibits went far to prove the industry, enterprise and hber- ality of the exhivitors. The live stock shown were highly encouraging showing that the farmers are wisely directing their attention ock. represented especially for superior quality. The townships representation for growing superior roots and fruit was wel! sustained. The ladies keep well to the front as well for the extent as the excellence of their exhibits. We leave 1t with the abl= staff of judges to determine the relative merits of the several exhibits as given in the prize list in this issue. The grounds were in first-class order and the active and efficient management | contributed much to the convenience of exhibitors and to the general success | of the show. HORSES -- DRAUGHT.
