Port Perry, March 28, 1394, Extract from a newspaper of the year 2000 A.D.--A few persons riding in a West-Madison street car last night witnessed an amusing episode. The car was full and a stylish young gentle- man who entered was preparing to stand during the rest of the trip; when two handsome ladies arose and politely offered him their seats. He took one with a bow of thanks. Soon after nn: other man, clad in cheap attirg and rather plain of feature, 'entered, Lut the young lady whose sext the first gentleman bad not accepted, kept her eyes fastened on her newspaper, and affected not to see him. The poor fellow would doubtless have had to stand all the way had not the stylish young gentleman arisen with flashing eyes and given up his own seat. The handsome lady evidently felt the re- buke, for she got out at the next cross: ing, while .a suppressed titter ran through the car. When Judge Howell was at the bar, Mr. Burgess, a barrister on circuit, to play a joke wrote on the lining of his hat 'caput vacuum' (empty head). The hat circulated about, exciting a ~ smile on every countenance except that of the owner, who deliberately, took it knowing the author, addressed the chief justice as follows ;-- 'May it please your lordship, ask protection,' (hold ing up his hat) ; "for I find that Brother ~ Burges has written his name ig my hat, and I have reason to believe he intends to make off with it. -------------------- Port Perry Market.
