The ship had been in a foy Pesibility of taking observations, been determined to stop the engines at 8 o'clock so as to take soundings as it was not known where the vessel was, but five min= utes before the time appointed to stop her from Friday morning prelcuding all | ag It had | bills. and all|eq cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided our break- fast tables with a delicately flavoured bever- re which may save us many heavy doctors' It is by the judicious 'se of such ar- ticles of dict that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to disease, Hundreds she struck upon a ledge of rocks deeply of subtle maladies are floating around us imbeding her how in them and here she | ondy to attack wherever there is weak stuck fust and nothing could move he-, an though nothing could be seen the vessel was hugging Sable Island so closely that the breakers could be heard on the beach. The engines were reversed but could not budge the firmly grasped vessel and recourse was now had to lightning her, there were 107 cattle on board and the poor animals were driven overboard one after another till all | were over. It was again (ried to get her oft but she would not stir. At noon on Sunday parties came from shore on a surf boat and took off eleven passengers, chicfly women and children and landed them safely on shore. The boat returned to the vessel and took off another load, mostly women and children, but these did not fare so well for tle boat was caught in the surf and turned end over end, some ot the passengers clung to the boat and were washed ashore with it, but four ladies and five children were drowned. All the other passengers and crew, with the exception of the above, were Janded safely in Halifax at 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 20th inst. Some of the cargo may be saved but it will be in a badly damaged condition, The steamer is expect. cd to break up. - A -------- re An amusing incident in the career of Mr, A. L. Holley is related by one of the New York papers, While working as a driver on one of the railways he made a wager with some of his fellows that he could runa locomotive a mile without fire, water, or steam--the locomotive to be taken empty and cold from the shop, and towed by an- other engine to a point at some distance on the road, where a level stretch of track favored Young Holley rode in solitary state on his cold locomotive to the scene of trial, and, unsuspscted by bis escort, so arranged matters that during the trip the motion of the drivers and piston stored the boilers with compressed air, This gave him, by the time the destined point was reached, an accumulation of power hy means of which he ran his mile and won wager this was certainly a very remarkable performance, the experiment. el leet The Guelph Mercury says:--In the caso of Brown v. George A. Drew, M. P,, of Elora, action was brought against the defendant to recover back money paid to Lim by a farmer in the township of Peel on a forged note, -- After a long trial last Court, the jury found a verdict for the plaintit for the full amount «laimed. The defendant moved in term for a new trial, but Judge Sinclair to-day, in a lengthy judgment, refused the appeal, and sustained the finding of the jury, The de- fendant intends to appeal. fhe locket which the Prince Imperial wore when killed, and which the Zulus left point, We may escape many a fatal shaftby keeping ourselves well fortified with pure Jlood and a properly nourished frame."-- Civil Service Gazette --Sold only in packets labelled-- 'James Erps & Co, Homaopathic Chemists, 48, Threadneedle Strect, and 170 Piccadilly, London." mle eee A Wonderful Discovery. on and all he speedy cure of (onsum pti To hat Jong loon such as stubborn Dy lec Jolds, 4 y Ce natin, ea in the Side Ta! The Prince inherited it, and wore it in a locket covered with miniature paintings, This amulet is a pivee of carved quartz, prepared by negro hands with certain mystical ceremonies ---- ----eer The Muskoka Hearld says :--While Jobn Code and a party of companions were de scending the Port carling river in a canoe, they were suddenly attacked by three large Inyxes, Two of the brutes succeeded [in getting into their frail craft; but the boyr, making good use of their paddles, got the better of their enemivs, killing one and maiming the other, while the third animal beat a hasty retreat and escaped into the woods.
