~ Wisoson, Coun, July 9, 1879. To the Editor of the North Ontario Obeeroer. Mr Editor,-- for many years, I thought I would describo this old town to you his place fs located on the road leading from Springfield, Mass, to Hartford, Conn., in one of tie most pro: ductive farming portions of New England ; all along this rond can be seen long rows of elm and maple tress that have been planted for nearly two and a halt centuries ; long before we had shade trees in Canada, except those of the forest, In looking over the old records I find that this part of the country bas been settled for that period of time, -- From this place can bo sedan the capitol tuilding at Hartford, this 1s said to be one of the finest, and most expensive structures of the kind in the United States ; it is at rly completed and it certainly prosent neal 1 industrious is a credit to the enterprising and peoplo who contributed to its erection. -- From this point can bescen numerous towns and villages located along the Connecticut river ; in fact, when one is going by rail from Springfield to Hartford, it appears to bo almost one solid city the entire distance, 80 thickly are the buildings located, The farms, as b rule, are small, and this brings the buildings in close proximity to each other; some of these buildings have been standing over hundred years and present tho appearance of age, while others of a more modern type lend an appearance of neatness and comfort; but Iam inclined to think, that the people hore, as a rule, do not exhibit that good taste in building and arranging their farms to look as well as is done in Canada, at least, 80 it appears to me. 1 find upon inquiry, that real estate is but little move advanced hero than in some parts of Canada. Farms can be bought heié for about ono hundred dollars per acre; this is nearly the Bverage price; the soil is mostly all sand and as @ result requires a large amount of fertilizer to keep it up, if farmers in Canada would use anything like the amount they use here I think some of Shem would be surprised at the result from thelr land, as the rich clay loam {s much potter adapted for holding the fertilizor and 1ife giving proportics it contains, _ Now, Mr. Editor, my business calls me from one large town and city to another and the manufacturing interest of the country would suprise your oldeet Canadian settlers, Amongst other cities I visited Holyok, which is one of tho largest manufacturing cities in this country ; almost every thing fs manufactured there, from tho finest thread to the finest silk goods. I find, upon ine quiry, that the coal used bere is shipped from the exhaustless coal fields of Penngyl- vauia, this being the case it places it be- yond the reach of manufacturers and can only be obtained as fuel ; there is but little block coal used in this section of country, as it will not pay to ship it such a long dis- tance at present, I cannot remember of soeing a furance or rolling mill since I left Buffalo, and were it not for the unsurpassed water privilege here it would be hard to establish manufacturing that would poy anything: like a fair rate of interest on the capital that must necessarily be employed in carrying on the trade which furnishes employment for many thousands of laborers who are constantly recciving fair wages, 1 think the people here are better paid than in Canada, as money seems to be nearly all employed in some branch of business or other. I find that but few people are unemployed--tramps and street loafers ccnstitute but a small per cent of the inhabitants, There are many things here to attract the attention of strangers and much of interest to every one that I will not at present try to enumerate.
