JNO. & D. J. ADAMS, PORT PERRY LIVERY STABLES Outside, the frosty winds of No- vember were blowing through the gaunt limbs of the trees that stood like grim sentinels around the Dal- ton farmhouse. The sky, darkly blue, was all a-glitter with stars, and away down in the horison swung a silver crescent. Insido the fire in the kitchen grate roared and crackled merrily, while the teakettle sung and bummed, and old Jonathan Dalton sat upright in his straight-backed chair and slowly smoked his after supper pipe in tranquail, comfortable enjoyment. Altogether, the warmth, the hight, the repose, the old-fashioned com- fort of the room from the plate of the rosy cheeked apples on the white table to the fat Maltese cat sleeping and purring on the home made rug in front of the fire, made a very pleasant pictare to Fric Clifford's eyes as he came in out of the clear, cold night--a tall, good looking young fellow, with the least spice of dandyism about him, that bad always made him just a little different from the other country beaux in the vicinity.
