4 ti ------ A good story is told of Elliston's manage= ment at Worcester, For his benefit he had announced a grand display of fireworks I-- No greater proof of the gullibility of the British public could be adduced than their y ing such an an t. . The theatre was so small that such an exhibition was practically impossible. A little before fhe night, Elliston called upon the landlord of the property, and, in course of conversa- tion, hinted at the danger of such a display, as though the idea had just struck him, -- The landlord took alarm, and, as Elliston had anticipated, forbade it. Nevertheless, the announcements remained on the walls, and on the night the theatre was crowded -- The performance proceeded without any notice being taken by the management of the fireworks, until murmurs swelled into clamour and loud cries. Then, with his usual kingly air, Ellisten came forward and bowed. He had made, he said, the most Yorate preparati for a ificent pyrotechnic display ; he had left nothing undone, but at the last moment came the terrible reflection, would it not Le danger- ous? Would there not be collected within the walls of the theatre a number of lovely young tender gizls of respectable matrons to do him honor? What if the house should catch fire--the panic, the struggle for life-- ah, he shuddered at the thought! Then, too he thought of the property of that worthiest of men, the landlord--he rushed to consult him--and he now called upon him--there he was seated in the stage-box--to publicly state, for the satisfaction of the distinguish- od audience he saw before him, that he had forbidden the performance from consider-- ations of safety. The landlord, a very nervous man, shrank to the back of his box, scared by every eye in the house being fixed upon him ; but the andience, thankful for {he terrible danger they bad escaped, durst into thunders of applause. ------------ A Modern Balaam. A 'learned clergyman in the State of. Maine was accosted in the following manner by an illiterate preacher, who despised education : ¢ Sir, you have been to college, I suppose? Yes, sir,' was the reply, 1 am thankful,' rejoined the former, ¢ that the Lord has opened my mouth to preach with- out any learning" ¢ A similar event,! re- plied 'the clergymen, took place in Balaam's time, but such things arc of rare occurence in the present days' _---------------- A Cheap Pork Barrel. To make a cheap pork barrel, buy a coal oil barrel ; knock one head in ; take a bunch of old hay, set fire to_it, and throw it in the tarrel ; let it burn until the staves begin to burn ; put it out by turning the barrel up- side down; scrape the coals off, and you have a good, sweet barrel. - | To Cure Bad Butter. | To cure bad butter throw it into boiling water, and let it stand until it is melted, then skim the butter off as clear. as possible; then put it into a churn and churn it over again with sweet milk ; treat it the same as new butter, adding sugar and salt to it when churned. This operation cleans the butter completely, but there isa loss in the weight of it, all impurities falling to the bottom of the vessel in which it has been with the water, ------ ---- Eprs's Cocoa. --URATEFUL AND Cou- orTiNG.--"By a thorough knowledge ot the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by a careful ap- plication of the fine properties of well-select- ed cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided our break- DAVIS & SONS! In presenting our Twenty-second Annual Ci of A 1] 1 to the farmers of Canada for the year 1877, we do so with more than an ordinary degree of pride and confidence, from the marked favor and patronage conferred upon us, and the steady and in- creasing demand from year to year for our new celebrated Farm Implements. ! * We shall i as bi fore. as rs, to make a Spiga of Agricultural Machinery--the Johnston Self-raking Reaper, thie Triumph Combine Reaper and Mower, the Cayuga Mower, the Young Canada Mower, and our new Whitby Harvester elaiming a large share of our time ard attention. i For the last twenty-two years we have given our most careful and undidvided attention to the manufacture and operation of the various machines in use, sifting out the best points, 1 UNDERTAKING A SPECIALTY. | Tarcioned errors, strengthening weak points, ting and rience has suggested. We employ only the best mechanical skill, and our machines pass under the mest careful supervision and Scrutiny--every detail being subjected to the severest criticism--and each before leaving our: works, to prove the sompletspesy of'every pant, tting them in operation by. any person of moderate mechanical rn 3 Our machinery has been selected afPlnstructed with a'special reference to the manu- facture of our own machines--many tools having been made for this particular purpose, and not adapted for other work, and our workmen are educated up to the wants and requirements of our manfac b h h knowledge of the construction of our machines, and a are thus enabled to obtain a higher degree o and proficiency than where general manu- facturing is carried on. 4 We are, therefore, enabled to Introduce a more perfect system into all the departments of manufacture, adding nt only, to the perfection o} thie work, but also to the rapidity of its exe- cution--and a ¢onsequent on of cost. This principle is regarded necessary in a w to turn out our machines with & Bigher degree to defy kind vy { Ny The Johnston Self-Raking Reaper is now so well known ag a Single Reaper, that a word of commendation wonld almost seem su- iming to is i perfluous, but as there are many i v mn who have adhered to the old original Johnston machine, without keeping up to the improvements, that justice 10 i to state that we have modified it in almost every essential part, and for strength, durab , and equality of cut, in every wind and condition of grain; lightness of draught and ease 0 management--the "Jol " as ared by t pre-eminently ahead of all other reapers. In proof of this position we have only to point to the many First Prizes awarded ns--at the last Provincial trial of Ontario, and mary county trials which have taken place all over Canada, within the Jast few years, OUR TRIUMPH COMBINED MACHINE with late improvements, is all that can be desired in a combined machine, and cannot fail to meet all the requirements of purchasers. : Our Improved Cayuga Chief, 'are both first cl ine. rater cong mack gm proportioning rou as our increasing ex| machine is thoroughly tested and there is-np.difficalty in pu ability. 1] regulated establishment, and we are enabled perfeetion, and at prices so low as absolutely Jr., and our Young Canada Mowers almost wholly of Iron and Steel. OUR NEW "WHITBY HARVESTER." As the country has beeome better adapted to machinery and many of our farmers! have be- come skilled in the use of machines, a growing demand bas sprung up fora Light, Durable, First-Class Reaper. Alive to the requirements of the day, we have succeeded in inventing a machine witha: Wrought Tron Frame, with the least possible gearing--with large, broad-faced drive wheel,-- and go constructed that the frame and table tilt at the same time, thereby keeping the pitman always in line with the knife. The rakes are driven directly from the main shaft--there being no perceptible side draft, and no weight upon the horses necks. We are confident that we have succeeded in inventing the most perfect Reaper, taking it in all its parts, that has ever been produced. We have applied for letters patent, and shall hold our invention, for our own Sewne [ aommes FOR ALL.
