Nothing to show for the trouble and toil Of the weary years that are past; Houses and lands and money and all, Have taken wings and fled, This very morning I signed away The roof from over our head. I shouldn't care for myself, Kate; I'm used to the world's rough ways. I've dug and delved, and plodded along Through all my manhood days ; But I think of youand the childrén, And it almost breaks my heart, For I thought so surely to give my boys And girl a splendid start, 80 many years on the ladder, I thought I was getting so near the top--) Only a few years longer, and then I fondly expected to stop, And put the boys in good places, Kate, With an easier life ahead, Btit now I must give the prospect up ; That comforting thought is dead. 'I'm worth more than my gold,' eh Kate! You're good to look at it so, But a man isn't worth very much, Kate, When his hair is turning to snow ; My poor little girls, with their soft white hands, And innocent eyes of blue, Turned adrift in the cold and heartless world, 3 What cari and what will we do? 'An honest failure ?' indeed it was Dollar for dollar paid And never a creditor suffered, whate'er Hard, unfeeling people have said, Better are rags and a conscience clear Then a palace and flushes of shame ; One thing 1 shall leave to my children ' Kate, And that is an honest name. What's that? 'The boys are not troubled a bit,' They are ready now to begin And gain us another fortune, and work And toil through thick and thin, The noble fellows | already I feel I haven't so much to bear, Their courage has lightened my heavy load Of misery and despair. And the girls are so glad it was honest! They d rather not dress so fine, 'I'han think they did it with money That wasn't honestly mine. They're ready to show what they're made of, Quick to earn as well as to save?' My, blessed, good little daughters, So generous and so brave! And you think, we needn't fret, Kate, While we have each other left, No matter of what possessions our lives, Have been by this stroke bereft? You are right, Kate, with a quiet conscience And a wife so good and true, [ll put band to the plough again, And I know that we will pull through, ---- The Troubles of a Poet. While Col. Bangs, editor of the Argus, was sitting in his office one day, a man whose brow was clothed with thunder ontered. Fiercely the table, hurled hisumbrella on the floor and sat down. "Aro you the editor?' he asked. 'Yes.' 'Can you read writing?' ¢Of course.' ' Read that, then,' he said, thrust- ing at the Colonel an envelope with an inscription on it. ' ,' said the Colonel, trying to spell it. «That's not a B. the mau, "S; oh, yes; I sco! Well, the words look like ¢ Salt for Dinner,' or «Souls of Sinners,' said the Colonel. ¢ No, sir,' replied the man, 'noth- ing of the kind! That's my name --Samuel H. Bruarer. I knew you couldn't read. 1 called to see you about that poem of mine you printed the other day, on the Surcease of Sorrow.' «I don't remember it,' said the Colonel. «Of course you don't because it went into the paper under the title of 'Smearcase Tu-morrow.' 'A stupid blunder of the com- positor's I suppose.' ¢ Yes, sir ; and that's what I want to seo you about. The way in which that poem was mutilated was simply scandalous. I haven't elept a night since. It exposed me to derision. Let me show you.' «Go ahead,' said the Colonel. *The first line when I wrote it, read this way : Lying by a weeping willow, gentle slope. «That is beautiful, poetic, affect. ing. Now how did your vile sheet present it to tho public? There it is! Look at that! Made it rend that way : It's an 8," said underneath a drive a man crazy !' ¢ But --' verse,' said the poet. yet. Now what does your compositor do ?-- Does he catch the sense of that beau- tiful sentiment? Does it sink into his soul ? No, sir! He sets is up in this fashion. Listen : Cart my pills before sunrise and love them if they hurt. ' Now isn't that a cold-blooded outrage on a man's feelings? I'll leave it to you if it ins't ?' 'It's bard, that's a fact,' zaid the Colonel. Mas 'And then take the fifth verse.--. I wrote: Iam weary of the tossing of the ocean as it eaves. tItis a lovely line, too; but im- agine my horror and the anguish of my family, when I opened your paper and saw the line transformed into : I am wearing out my trousers till they're open at the knees | That 'That is a little too much ! seems to me liko carrying the thing an inch or two too far. I think I have constituiional right to murder that compositor ; don't you ?' 'I think yon have.' ' Let me read you one more verse I wrote : I smell ihe fying echoes as they roam among And I feel my soul awaken to the ecstacy that thrills. 'Now what do you s'pose your miserable outcast turned that into ? Why into this-- Ismell the flying shoes as they roast along the bulls, And I peel my soul mistaken to the errtarcy that whirls. 'Gibberish, sir! Awful gibberish! I must slay that man, Where is he ?' ¢ He is out just now,' said the Col. onel. 'Come in to morrow.' 'Iwill, said the poet ; 'and I will come armed.' 1 : Then he put on his hat, shoulder. ed his umbrella and drifted down- stairs.-- Max Adeler.
