It was to meet such difficulties as this that Tontines----' 'Brother I' I wrote the first sitting at my desk, and said the last aloud, impatiently--well, there, angrily--for Mattie had pounced into the room, run to the back of my chair, and clapped her hands over my eyes exclaim- ing-- 'Oh, Dick, what a shame | And you pro- thised to come up and dress I' I do wish you would not be so childish I 1 cried, snatching away her hands: 'There's a blot you've made on my manuscript.' {Don't be 80 cross, sir I' she said laughing, as she gave a waltz round the room, making her pretty silk dress whisk over one of the light chairs, which she merrily picked up, and then coming to my writing table, she took a rose out of a basket of flowers, aid began to arrange it for her hair. , 'I'm not cross,' I said coldly, 'but engaged in aserious work of a mercantile and mone- tary nature. You seem to think men ought always to be butterflies.' . 'No, I don't Dick dear,' she cried. 'There, will that do?' Sho held her head on one side for me 10 sce the creamy rose nestling in her crisp, dark hair; but after a glance at it T let my eyes fall upon my desk, and went on writing my pamphlet. *I saw she was looking wistfully at me, but T paid no heed and she then came and rested her hands upon my shoulders. ¢ Are you cross with me Dick?' she said softly. : 'Cross? no!' I jerked out impa- tiently. 'Only I thought I had married a woman and she turned out to be a child.' There was a silence then of a few minutes, only broken by the scratch: ing of my pen. The little twitched a little as thoy lay upon my shoulders, and I very nearly hands wrote down, instead of, 'The calcula. tion arrived at by the projectors of tontines'-- Richard Marlow, can you be such how a disgraceful But ot course I did write it--only thought--and then I wretch ?' not felt wonderfully disposed to turn round, snatch the graceful figure to my breast, and kiss away the tears that I knew to be gathering in her eyes. Somchow or another, though, I did not do it--only went on glumly writing for I was cross, worried and annoyed. I had set myself a task that necessitated constant applica- | tion, and I was not getting on as [ could wish; so like many more weak minded individuals of the male sex, instead of asking for the comfort and advice of my wife, I visited my wrath on the first weak object at hand, and that object was the lady in question. ¢ Please, Dick dear, don't be angry with me. I can't help feeling very young and girlish, though I am your wife. Ido try, oh! so hard, to be womanly; but Dick dear, I'm only eighteen and a half. 'Thirteen and a half' I should say, I said scornfully, just as some sour spirit 'was urging me on lo say biting, sarcastic thing, that Iknew would pain the poor girl; but for life of me I could not help it. There was no answer--only a little sigh--and the hands were withdrawn. I went on writing rubbish that 1 knew I should have to cancel. ¢ Had you not better got ready, Dick? said Mattie, softly. 'You said you would come, when I went up stairs, and the Wilson's won't like it if we are late." :Hang the Wilsons! I growled, There was another pause filled up with the scratch, scratch of one of the noieest pens I ever used, and an- other little sigh. Mattie was standing close behind mo but I did not look round, and at last she glided gently to a chair and sat down. + What are you 'going todo? I said roughly. ay | ¢ Only wait for you, Dick dear, she said. ' _ "You need not wait. Go on, I shan't come. Say I've ahoadache-- « Dick, are you unwell? she said tenderly, assho came behind me once more and rested her little hands on my shoulder. ¢ Yes--no. Pray, don't bother / Go on. Perhaps I'll come and fetch you.' There was another pause. 'Dick, dear, I'd rather not go without you," she said meekly, at last, ¢ And I'd rather youdid go without me, I said angrily. 'The Wilsons are our best friends and I won' have them slighted.' 'Then why not come, Dick dear?' said the little woman and I could seo that she was struggling brave. ly to keep down her tears. ¢ Because I've no time for such frivolity. There, you've wasted epough of my timealready, so go.' Scratch, scratch, scratch went the exasperating pen, as I went on writ- ing more stuff to cancel, and yet too weak and angry to leave off like a sensible man, run up and change my things and accompany my little wife to thu pleasant social gathering a few doors lower down our road. She had been looking forward to the visit as a treat. So had 1 till that gloomy fit came over me ; but as I had taken the steps already made, I felt that I could not retreat withgut looking foolish ; so I acted with that usual wisdom displayed by man undet such circumstances, and made matters worse. 'Did you hear me say that I wish- ed you to go alone?' I said angrily. "Yes, yes, Dick dear, I'll go if you wish," Mattio said very meekly, 'but indeed I'd rather stay at home.' 'You are desired to go; you have a rose in your hair,' I said satirically --oh, what poor satire, when it was put there to please me--,und they expect you so now go--and enjoy yourself,' I added by way of sting to my sensible speech. 'I can't enjoy myself, Dick,' she said gently, unless you come too. Let me stay.' 'I desire yon togo I' I exclaimed banging my hand down on the desk. She looked at me with the great tears standing in her piteous eyes, and then, coming nearer, she bent over and kissed my forehead. 'Will you come and fetch me, Dick ?' she said softly. 'Yes--no--perhaps--I dont know I said roughly, as I repelled her caresses; and then looking wist- fully at me, she went slowly to the door, glided out, and was gone. That broke the spell, and I start od from my seat, but more angry I was wroth with her now for obeying me so meekly, and than ever. I gently opened the door, to hear her call the maid, and tell her to accompany her as far as Wilsons', Then I heard them go--heard the girl return, the door close, and I was alone. Alone? Well, not exactly ; for so to speak' I was having an inter- view with my angry self, as. I felt that I was, asking how I let a feel- ing of annoyance act upon my better nature and make me behave as I had to the sweet liftle girlish being who during the six months we had been married, had never looked but with eyes of love. «Chango your things and go after her,' something seemed to say , but L repelled it, threw my. writing aside, kicked off my boots, snatched wy slippers out ot the sideboard, thrust the easy chair in front of the cosy fire, threw myself into it, and then with my feet in the fender and my hands in my pockets, I sat, mor ose, bitter and uncomfortabe, gazing at the glowing embers. % 'She had nojbusiness to gol' I exclaimed. 'She knew I was up all last night; writing that abominable book, and was out' of sorts, and ought to Bave stayed.' 1" "Pho I reviewed the past half hour, a'and grew calmer as I leaned back, knowing as did, and, wel, that I had forced ber to go, poor child, and how miserable she would be. niut aos W She'll forget it amongst all these people,' I said bitterly ; but-F-do not believa it, and at last I 'sat there calling mysélf idiot, blind, madman, at 'me 'to plant as I had, the. first seeds of what might grow into a very Upas| tree of dissention and blight the whole of our married life. ¢ Poor little darling!' T said at last 'I'll wait up till she comes home, and then tell her how sorry I am for my folly, and ask her forgivenes.' 'But as aman can Ido that? I suid, ¢ Will it not be weak ?' ¢ Never mind,' I exclaimed 'I'lldo it! Surely there can be no barver thing todo than to own one's self Life's too short to blur it with potty quarrels. And suppose wrong. she is taken ill tonight--my darling, whom I love with all my heart ?-- And suppose she went too near the fire, and ber dress caught alight ?-- There, how absurd! Thank good- ness, she is in silk and not in one of those fly-away muslins I' Concluded next Week. Hort fintarioBbserter ONLY ONE DOLLAR A YEAR = = Editor. OCT. 25, 18717 PORT PERRY Fear and Trembling in the Grit Camp. These over modest, honust inten- tioned gentry whose ccvetousness overcame their better and induced them to take advantage judgment of the gushing casual advantages which the McKenzie government place within reach ot their voting apparatus, have got themselves into deep water. Not satisiied with their sessional allowance of $1000 for five or six week's attendance, they must filch from the country eight or ten times that amount in way of Government fat jobs in the very teeth of theIndependence of Parliament Act which declares that any member so pilfering off the country forfeits bis seat. No mat- ter, this went on from year to year McKenzie & Co. winking at the de- ception and still feeding their friends, members or no members, with fat Government contracts until the out- rage had almost become tho rule and thirty of the most red-handed Grits are now found disgracing seats in parliament while they at the same time pocket the proceeds of their gushing Government contracts.-- The penalty attached to the viola- tion of the Independence of Parlia- ment Act isa fine of $2,000 for every day in which a member so disqualified occupies his seat in the house. Such corruption in some in- stances become most outrageous, for instance that of the Speaker of the house whose pickings amounted to $20,000. The Opposition now sum- moned courage enough to speak out and Mr. Speaker being found guilty was obliged to relinquish bis seat, though a corrupt Grit committee used every means however dishonest, in order to have him keep his seat despite the law. But when they could not make the trick work and the guilty one must go McKenzie | & Co, step forward and with the as- sistance of their unscruplous voting apparatus - pass an Act reliev- ing them, the guilty ones,of the pen- alty they had incurred by violating the law, and so the $2,000 a day pendity becomes a doad lotter.-- They get all their unrighteous pick ings and aré relieved from paying anything back to the country. But no sooner are these dizqualified ones driven from their seats than they rush back to their constituents all the richer and more unscrupulous for their grabbings and they are again returned to the seats from which they havo just been driven for violating the law. However certain legal gentlemen whose opin- ions are not to be despised 'have given it as their opinion that these casual advantage men 'being. driven from their seats aro ineligible 'for té-dlection daring the parliament penalty of $2,000 every day they have so satand should bedisqualified for all time to come. If a poor man violate the law he must pay the penalty to the utmost rigor and why should these grabbers escape becatide. they are wealthy. Tranksarving Day.--The Lieut= Governor for the province of On- tario bas by proclamation set apart Thursday, the 22nd day of Novem- ber next, as a day of thanksgiving throughout this province for the past abundant harvest and the bless- ings of peace which we enjoy. The other provinces throughout the dom- inion will observe the sameday, at least an agreement to that effect was entered into. ly The Murphy Wave. The Murphy wave and Rie movement have so far overtopped the Moody & Sankey effort that the latter is never more mention- ed, Murphy and Rine having the entire field to themselves. Mr, Rine has just been in Ottawa during the past week and during that time he has added two {Hovia sand signatures to the temperance pledge. He travels in style. The Montreal Star noticing his coming to Montreal says :--Mr, Rine pays his first visit to Montreal toanorrow, stopping with his private Secretary, Mr. Boyd' at the Ottawa Hotel, On Sabbath afternoon and evening he is to be heard at Association Hall and the Academy of Music, the latter having been kindly offered free of charge. _-------------------- . The directors covered the trick by entering large amounts to the credit of the Company by, increasing the 1alue of the stock ,.-- The Bank was not up to the trick and they lent $166,000 taking 1,660 shaves of the railway bonds, When the Bank came to realize these bonds they only got $63,636 that is $114,136 less than what was paid for them and the Bank iz trying to recover this amount from the ex-directors.
