PORT ry AUG. 5, 1875. NH ; The Contest in South Victoria. Messrs Hudspeth and Wood the two candidates for the representa- tion of Soutli Victoria in the Local Legislature entered the lists in ernest on Tuesday, last that being nom- ination day. The result of the first round may be rather slim ground on which to predicate the result of the fight, still poor Wood was thrown so heavily in the first ter that it was generally admitted that he had- no chance. Hudspeth had him on the ropes and pounded away at him while he was perfectly helpless; his seconds, Mowat, and O' Donohoe and Ris bottle holder, the Post man, were ready to rush in and create a rum- pus had it not been for the whole- some fear in whi¢h they were held Test Hudspeth's seconds,Cameron and McDougall, should give them a brush. The prevailing opinion amongst those who have the best means of Jnewing, is that Wood will he badly whipped, and he ought to be, first for his own sake and then for the sake of the crowd he is mixed up] with, a lot of genuine political gam- blers who are doing their best td corrupt the electors throughout the provinge, whose only hope of victory is based on their skill in working on the appetites of their vigtims in the "Come along Jobn" style. In the case of Mr Wood the adage "Birds of a feather flock together' tholds true to the very letter ; forif Mr Wood: be not much of giver he is a perfect success as a receiver, and, God knows, the present Ontario Gov- ernment has no need of any more receivers; the ¢ountry is already teing skinned to satisfy the greed of the present stand and delivers with which they are infested ; 'in fact the Treasury can't stand it ; our spendthrift Government bas got to the bottom of the chest and with another sucker of the Wood type added to the gang we would soon be driven to liquidation or direct taxa- tion. Butif the people consider that they are not sufficiently taxed al- ready then they may go in and sup- port the present Ontario .Goyern- ment and return such men as Wad and other general receptacles of the good things of the country. South ¥ictoria has now a splendid oppor- tunity of showing their disapproba- tion of ile wasteful extravagance amd corrupt influences of a Govern- ment and party who have gone back on all their fair promises, eried pur( ily and practised cerruption, sho by their extravaganes lo friends'bave nearly run the Province into finan- cial shipwreck, have cast -agloom -over trade at home and crippled the «credit of the country abroad. Wood by his accepting office endorses the extravagant and corrupt practices of the Government with whom he seeks to identify himself, and should he -succeed he would prove one -of the most. rapacious absorbents of the lot end would zo far to/hasten thatend whieh we have every: nea son to dread from the presemt-oourse| of the Government and party. But it cannot be that 'the intelligent electors of South Victoria will ven) der themselves parties: to' bolstering ap the tottering. fortunes of a Gov- . ernment which: on every princi- -ple of right and justice should have] been driven from power 'long ago and who are now about to. reap >the fruits of their wrong doing. This valuable little township has of {ate been keeping up in the march of progress, but from present ap- pearances it would seem that the future progress will be much more rapid than that of the past, and that when a fow years have gone the re- maining signs of unthrift will have im. petus will have been given the car of progress and the old shaky | concern of a bridge will have been t struc- ture. So far as we have had an opportunity of obssrving, the crops throughout the township are par- ticularly fine and in a forward state. In driving over Spring Water Farm, lately purchased and taken possession of by James Graham, Esq., one is forcibly impressed with the indica- tions of push and industry which meet the eye in all directions. Here is a ffteen acre field which but a few months ago fairly bristled with stumps now under a crop of thrifty turnips and not a vestige of stump orrubbish within it; and there: the large field from which hod just heen gathered a splendid crop of barley. And far as the oye could reach over this handsome 800 acre farm, the waving oreps hastening to ma- turity told a pleasing tale of progress and plenty, as the unfailing rewards of intelligent industry. 'Woare not aware whether or not the farm takes its name, "Spring Water" from the abundant supply of spring water with awhiebit is favared, but) it certainly hagas fine and service- able a supply of choice spring water as could be desired, and it is .care- utilized. We arrived at Mr. Gra- ham"s dairy just in time to witness the churning operation as performed by one of Mr. Sexton's United Can. The process was. an interesting one ani the re sult satisfactory in the highest A quactity of milk per. fectly sweet, wishout 'the slightest tint of acidity was put into the churn and the churning commenced. With milk in this sweet, new state if butter eould have heen braught at all by the old process it would only, have been after séveral hours in- cessant labor; this really excellent churn brought butter within a few i| minutes, and of such quantity and quality as no other description of churn yet invented cowld produce, The continuous current of fresh air forced into the cream during the process of churming andithe canstent escape provided for the impure air or gases secure for the batter ss churned the complete absence of all disagreeable flavor oy unwholesome gas which must exist to a greater or Jess extent in all butter produced in.a churn not provided with the means of supplying fresh air and expelling that which is impure dur- process of churning, Sexton's 'is the only} in- and it is for these that the patient has been W. M. Jones, Beq., of the firm of Jones Bres., was-tlso, present.at the time and expressed the utmest sat isfaction with the results both as to the time in which the butter was brought and the quantity and qual- ity of the butter produeed. He ap- peared much interested in the appa- ratus for supplying fresh ~dic and All miilk, it matters 'not how or where the epws are #ed, con- tain certain gases which ifinot ex- polled daring the process éf. thurn- ing remain in the She rendering it less "healthful and Jess 'pleasant than it would otherwise bo. The hay fields have been clear- ed; the golden arops of barley are being harvested and camied to the barns while all other crops present a most encouraging prospect, 'The signs of progress.are increasing with, pleasing rapidity and every intércst appears to participate in the general move upwards and onwards. Thanks to the enterprise ' of Mr. E. Bryans an important new industry has beep introduced into.that township--the manufacture of brick. Mr. Bryans having seauzed the very best mater- ial for making briek on bis property] about two miles west of Williams-- burg engaged experienced thands and set a brick yard a going where are now being manufactured brick ot the very best quality, such in fact as ought tosecure a ready sale not only inCaréwright but.in the neigh- boring townships.
