Says a writer to the Cimcinnatti Gazette : It is not at ail surprising that young men, even with comfort- able incomes, fear to marry fashion- ably educated girls, when the im- mence amounts necessary to dress them are taken into cousideration. "Why," said one young man, "to be sured have an income of $20,000 a a year, but what is that when a first class establishment and expensive wife are in question? I live at the club, have my horses and a variety of equipages, can travel where and when I please, and have my pick of the girls to whom I pay my devoirs, always careful, of course, not to be too pointed in my cares to any par ticularstar. If1 married in my walk of like I must take my wife to an establishment corresponding to the one under whose roof she has always been luxuriantly sheltered. Her father will give her a magnificent troussean, every dress in which will cost hundreds of dollars, and I will be expected to maintain this extra-- vagant style of living or it possible to surpass it. Why, for instance, Miss ----: Well, I admire her, in- tensely ; think she is beautiful, ac- complished, and unspoiled by the world, but, she is one of the most ex- travagant little creatures I ever came across. She has been luxuri- antly reared and really thinks that money is of no more use than so much paper. She never purchases any- thing even to perfumeries, without paying the most exorbitant prices "A New Cure for Wounds. Mr. 8. W. A: soon as such a wound fs inflicted get a light stick (a knife or file handle will do) and commence to tap gently on the wound. Dt not stop for the hurt, but coutinue until i; bleeds freely and becomes perfectly numb, When this. point is reached you are safe, and all that is then necessiry is to protect it from dirt Do tibt stop short of the bleeding and the numbness, and do not on any account close the opening with plaster. Nothing more than a little simple cerate on a clean cloth is necessary. I have used and seen this used on all kinds of simple punctures fo' thirty years and never knew a single instance of a wound becoming inflamed or sore after the treatment above. Among other cages a coal like tooth going entirely through th foot, a rusty darning neeble through the foot a bad bite by a sucking pig, several instances of file shanks through the hand, and number- less cases of rusty nails, awls, &c.. but I never knew a single failure of this treatment. A Farar Praomicir Joke --A practical jocker, named Edward Cole, near Penn Yan: was killed by his brether-in-law, George Pierce, some time ago, Cole came home and knocked at the door, for a joke. When ask: ed, 'Who's there?' he answered, 'Yourmoney or your life I' Not being admitted he went to the rear of the house and pulling off his boots he clambered upon the shed, and effected his enterence through a window. Mr Pierce who sleeps down stairs, hearing him cried out, ' Don't come into this house or I'll kill you." Seizing a butcher knife he started up stairs. "rom the New Haven Journal, May 20 The particulars of au interesting ceurence at the corset factory of Mr. Strouse, on Oak street, Thursday, viil be of interest to students of hose occult matters in the mental ind physical conditons of human -eings which for ages have puzzled he physicans and philosophers of he world. The facts, in brief are w follows: In the factory of Mr Strouse a large number of young adies, some of considerable intellig- once, are employed in the various ranches of work usually perforused n every lurge fuctory of the kind in 'Lie country. Atabout 11 o'clock in, the forenoon of Tuesday, a small knot of girls stood chatting on ditfer- sut topics, based upon current events 1s reported in the daily newspapers ind by a natural progression in the . talk they came to speak -of sudden deaths, and of the recitals of cases where persons had been cut off from lifo without previous warning of the nearnese of their dying day. There wasallatonce felt umong the girls the shadow of solemnity as of the sweep of a pall through the room, and the conversation which had been quite was ina moment hushed as though a spell of silence had been laid on every tongue. One particularly spirited and pretty stood at the head of the stairs in the dark to receive him. Mr Pierce immediatly grappl- ed with the supposed assassin, and during the encounter cut his throat with the butch- er knife, severing the jugular vein, The young man exclaimed : 'You have killed Edward Cole | My poor wife and children!' and dicd. Mr. Pierce is about 38 years of age, and one of the best citizens of Yates County. Mr Cole, his brother-in-law, was younger, also from an excellent family and of the highest integrity. She gave $5 tor a button-hook ; $10 for as many drops of attar of roses ; $20 for some silk stockings ;' $256 for & fan ; $45 for a pretty handkerchief, and there was 8100 expended in a parcel so small that I readily carried everything in one of my inner coat pockets, and these expenditures are every day occurrences. Catching 8 Cannon Ball. A correspondent to the Chicago Inter-Ocean tells the following story: Tt seems that our hero went down to Chatsworth, the Duke of Devon- shire's estate, in England, a princely domain which all tourists visit.-- There is a little village on it, where an ionis built for the accommoda- tion of visitors; and when Mr A. reached there after having beon through Chatsworth, he was natural- ly so much impressed with its beauty that he couldn't réfraid froth saying 80 to a quite looking man, the land- lord, who was sitting on the inn piazza with him after tea. «Quite a place, isn't it?" said the A very singular exhibition was given recently at the Jardin Mobille, There hag beer' performing at the Follies Bergeres, a man named Holtum, an American, who bas cannon balls fired at him and catches the ball in his hands. This prodigious feat wa witnessed nightly, and although the actors present avowed that there was no trick Pierre Vernon of the Monde Illustre, would not believe it. He said that the cannon ball must be thrown to Holtum from the stage. -- The latter made a bet of 5,000 francis that he could perform the feat under circumstanc es which left no room for doubt, and when the bet was taken, Vernon designated Mab- ille as the place for trial. All the journal- ists of Paris were invited, and they found Holtum there before his cannon. It was American. examined with minute care, and the heavy 'Yes, a pleasant place enough,' |ball passed from band to hand. 1 am no said the Englishman. longer in my own house,' said Holtum ; 'you are master here and must watch over all the arrangements.' Having carefully lashed and examined his cannon, it was charged and Holtum took his piace against a plank target some ten yards away. This was to show that thie ball was solid, and the force of the powder sufficient to send it through the plank, Holtum got = the aim of his gun, and then placed his head in a certain position against a plank giving ¢The fellow who ow it must be worth a-mint of money,' said No. 1 «Yes, he's comfortably off,' an- swered No. 2 quitely. « Wonder if Icould get a look at the eld chap,' said thé American, after a short silence. ¢Fshould like ! re-in-law, have always been warm, intimate | girl--Miss shea--being disinclined to acknowledge the rather unusaal and fearsome sense of something aw- ful which had come among them, in an effort at playfulness placed on a work-bench near one of the young girls 8 common land turtle which had been picked up somewhere.-- The girl on whose bench it was laid turned and saw it, gave a shriek which sounded elfish in intensity, and immediately fell to the floor in a | fuint, as though she bgd been dead. Ass apparently led to a touch of sha eminda Af tha aan people, some of whom grew white in counfenance, witha sct expressivn on their fuces, and for an instant not a word or cry was uitered. Soon the same kind ot thing happened to an- other of the girls. She fell to the floor in what looked like a dead faint or the trance of a person ex- hausted by prolonged mental ex- citement, leading to exhaustion.== shortly another girl was seized with the same kind cf an attack, and she, too, yielded to the influence and was numbered with those who had already given way. One after another the | girls fainted and fell until no less than seven ladies had been brought {low. The affuir was so unexpected that consternation or at least deep interest \ as shown by the workmen employed in the men's department. Some of them grew tremulous and | 8'lid as if with sudden fear, and pretty soon one of them was taken with an attack similar to that which nfllicted the young ladies. He appa- rently summoned all the forces of his mind and body to resist the myster- ious tendency, but he, too, yielded und fainted away. The thing began.to look serious. Whatailed everybody was the question of everybody not immediately effected by or under control of this sigular nervous dis- pensation, and at this juncture so painful was the sense of apprehen- sioo that when Mr. Morris, the fore- man, ordered a stoppage of the work und a dispersion 6f the work peopl to their homes a great relief was felt. The same ball was picked up by the journalists who again charged the gun and sent home the ball, and this time Holtum caught it in his hands as neatly as he does nightly on the stage. He wen his bet, and no one seemed disposed to accept his offer of 3,000 francs to any ene who would' perform the same astonishing 'feat. The physical force required must be enoritious, but Holtum showed his strength by tessing up counon balls as if they were so many oranges.
