And then his social qualities made him a wel- come guest and insured him a knife and fork at many a good man's table Of course the glass of grog was al- vays Tim's whenever he wanted it, and often when he did not. "Tim, said a friend of whose thorough: bred as nineteen and six- pence is to a pound. But such were the inexorable decreés of fate, that there he stood in the stable day after day, sick and sorry, cating his head off, or as Tim expressed it, "chewing his nut," for three long weeks, after the penultimate horse had been disposed of. It 1s not to be supposed that this horse, and the fixture he was making of the Irishman, escaped the eye of 80 enterprising a man of business as Mr. Ford, who bezan' to calculate the loss that was daily 'the gonse- quence of this detention. "When be first brought that unlucky crittur into this town he asked two hundred for him, then it was one hundred and fifty, and now he has dropped it toa hundred. In another week it will be fitty," said Fora to himself, "that will be abont my cut--antl Tim shall look him over for me."" WALKER. H, §, JOHNSON. which nobody excelled him, or could take him in, | There was, however, in the same | town--occasionally, only, for he was bit of a rover--a man who though not so good # Judge as Tim, was a better tradesman, being a more un- scrupulous buyer and seller, a dealer in horses of all sorts, and screws in particular. Archimedes himself did not more appreciate the power and value of the screw than Tim's contemporary--and this was Jockey Ford. e was not called Jockey from his skill as a horseman, for he never rode a race in his life, but from his "hossy' style of dress, and mode of dealing ; and it you bought |a horse of Jockey, it was coveat emp- ter." Heo was a different man from Tim altogethor--hard, unflinching, and bargain-driving. His lineage, too, was not 50 gentle, as some of his kin were said to have acquired posses- sion of horses by means which the laws in those days punished with great severity. He had a great opinion of Tim's judgment, and nev er scrupled to avail himself of it.-- Tt is not quite certain that Tim al- ways got his guinea ; but perhaps they shared the bargain, which, with their united abilities, vas sure to be a good one. : It happened that Dennis S---, who hailed from County Cork: brought with him to the Repository' in the town where Tim and Ford abided, a string of good-looking horses of the hunter class. These he sold as enstomers presented them selves, and for handsome prices, too. He warranted them hunters, and alk lowed them to be ridden ; and, as they were nice norses, yoting and fresh, they were marketable, and sold accordingly--all but one, a most unfortunate animal : for it always happened that when he was to be takén out for trial, be had the influ- enza, or a cough, had been pricked in shoeing, or wasthe victim of some other ill that horseflesh is heir to.-- A most unlucky horse he was 40 be sure, and most uwlucky was poor) Denms, who used to sigh about; him daily and wish he had never brought him across the channel ; apd yet, if anything, he was the' best, looking nag of the lot, nearly sixteen. hands Mr Ewers would like to know if { tem would not be productive of mischi allow parties to go on and make such re. pairs as they saw fit and send in their ac- count, he would like to know where such a would end. The clause was then adopted. The next clause recommended the grant- ing of $500 towards building a bridge over the, Severn between the counties of Ontario and Simcoe ; the county of Simcoe having granted a like sum. Mr Gillespie had decided objections to this clause; if not compelled by law he woul t object to paying one dollar towards the con- struction of this bridge, he wishes to see local improvments susgained by local effort ; the townships concer should build and maintain there own bridges ; he will oppose the passage of this clause, Mr Bigelow said that if ihe county of Ontario were all likely-to be es much inter- ested in the construction of this bridge as Simcoe is then there might be some reason in asking Ontario to pay as much towards it as Simcoe, but such is not the case; Simcoe will profit five as much as Ontario ly this bridge as it will form a channel for the trade of the northern part of Ontario to pass into Simcoe, so that Simcoe being much the larger profiter ought to pay the larger amount. He would recommend allowing them to go ou and build the bridge and let it be scttled by arbitration how much each country should pay. Mr Bickell considers that this country had already built bridges enough in that section of country and if they are not satisfied with the bridges already built let them build more at their own expense. The clause was adopted. The committee refused to recommend the prayer of the petition of the Reeves of I'horah and Mara for building of a bridge between the said towiships.
