Port Perry Dec. 4, 1873. dutp fintario Poon ---------------- -- ONLY ONE DOLLAR A YEAR JAMES BAIRD, Editor. Sern seoeeroio cies PERRY, J AN. 1, 1874. Municipal Ele:tlon. It is no part of the duty of a pub- lic journalist to dictate to the elec- tors as to whom they should give their suffrages ; as free mon it is the privilege and duty of all to use their suffrages in whichever way they conceive will best conduce to the public good, And when we assert before hand that such and such men will be returned it is not from any spirit of dictation bat from what we can learn from the expressed feel- ings of the electors. Wé may say for instance that Mr. Sexton will be Reeve of Port Perry this ycar, and we base this prediction on the fact that at least nine tenths of the rate- payers expressed their most bitter dissatisfaction with the wanner in which Mr. Bigelow, as Reeve had managed the affairs of the corpora. tion during the past year, and of! course it is only reasonable to ex- pect that they will follow up their complaints by removing that officer. While electors have a perfect right 0 mY re OXCITISE Or WIC Irancnise they have no right to the abuse of it; for they ought to know that the franchise is a trust which thoy are bound to discharge in the interest ot the unfranchised as well as that of themselves, and if they find that a public officer has been remiss in his daties in the past they are bound by' the very principle of the franchise In the absence of a sufficiently de- cided opinion as to the men likely to form our council for the present year it would be hazardous to at- tempt an assertion on that head ; but it must be obvious to all that there is an abundance of good mate- at their head, an efficient and relia ble Council, and one in which the ratepayerr will place implicit confi- dence. By a parity of reasoning we hav@nat the slightest hesitancy in asserting that Mr, Grabam will be returned by a very large majority, to the position of Reeve of Reach at the coming election. It is admitted by all, even by the few opposed to) Mr Graham, that no fault can be . the administration of] the affairs of Reach. during the past year; the yery man Who has taken | County Council for 1874. ~ the field against him was perfectly | satisfied with Mr Seligw'y ws as goat isin of Weir signified his Aesite that the whole council should boretarced for the several poisitions. which they then occupied. Wo stated" further that the investigation had revealed (as we had been informed) several thousands of dollars for which the Iate Treasurer would have to ac- count. We would be unworthy the position of public journalists did we from fear or favor remain silent when the public interests were at stake. But in our exposing this matter it appears that we ran up against some parties: for our MP. P. so far forgot himsolf as to abuse us in our absence and brand us as pro- mulgators of that which was untrue because of our dislike to him-a meanness of which he may be capa- ble but to which we have not yet descended. Again when the matter came up at the nominations Messrs. Holman Weir and Sperce, all aspi- rants to office, publicly declared in the Town Hall, on Monday last; that the whole matter of {vestigation was 1 TUrCe; Las ere Way wothtog in it and that it was only an exhibi- tion of spite on the part of Mr. Bick ell and that the investigation never would amount to anything. Tn or der to vindicate ourselves and set the matter right before the County we havo secured a copy of a» letter from R. IL Lawder--Special County Auditor--to0 J. B. Bickell, Reeve of West Whitby, giving the result of the special audit on the County ac- count of the late Treasurer, Wm. Paxton. The letter will be found at length in our columns and doubt less will as greatly astonish our readers as it did ourselves.
