In all the years since the NFL merger of the late '60s, no one had ever had five picks in a single half of football. Why would you put an untested, fifth-round draft choice, backup rookie quar- terback into the starting role for a West Coast road game against a team that was playing inspired football and featured two superb pass rushers in Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram? Why, indeed? To be fair, Taylor had been incredibly average the previ- ous two weeks (he had a mere 56 yards passing versus New Orleans the week before), but those losses were more about porous defence (especially versus the run) than they were about the quarterback position. Taylor returned to his start- ing role the following week and led the Bills to a road win in Kansas City before losing (no surprise) to the Patriots this past Sunday. It looks as if Buffalo's 17-year playoff drought is des- tined to continue. Of the four major leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), the Bills' post- season absence is currently the longest, thanks in part to the Toronto Blue Jays, who held that unenviable position until just recently. Baseball's Seattle Mariners, mired in a 15-year famine, are next closest. Not to pick on football, but if you want to check out dumb decisions from the past, go to YouTube and check out Leon Lett of the Dallas Cowboys (he has two beauties) and my all- time favourite, Washington quarterback Gus Frerotte head- butting a wall after scoring a touchdown, sending himself to the hospital before halftime. ••• Brian Totzke is a freelance writer who has never made a dumb decision in his life. The Hawks took the Bat- tle of Waterloo game beating the last-place Warriors 67-50 for Laurier's 18th consecutive victory over their cross-town rivals. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-4 on the year, and hand the Warriors the 10th loss of their winless season. Offensively, the trio of Nicole Morrison, Irena Rynkie- wicz and Rachel Woodburn shouldered the load for Laurier. Morrison left her mark in every category, highlighted by leading the team with 16 points and dishing out a game- high five assists. The fifth-year guard also pulled-down seven rebounds and picked up four steals. In what was a solid per- formance by Rynkiewicz, the third-year forward produced 14 points on six of 12 shooting from the field, in addition to pulling in four rebounds. For Waterloo, Ann Stew- art led the way, picking up a career-high 16 points off the bench. She also led the team with six rebounds. Morrison was honoured at halftime for surpassing 1,000 points for her career, a feat only accomplished by three other players in Laurier women's basketball history.
