"I went back the following year, and there she was again," said Diet- rich. "She said, 'Th anks, my mommy is all well.' It really gets you sentimen- tal." But there won't be any new stories this year. Dietrich was in Kingston at the start of November for a conference featuring other magicians doing a pre- sentation for a local disc jockey when he suff ered a serious injury. "It was a rock'n roll tune, I don't know maybe the snowflake shuffle, and I was doing some awesome moves when I landed wrong on my leg and broke my left femur between my hip and my knee," said Dietrich. Th e break was so bad that he had to have surgery and doctors had to insert a medal rod and immobilize his leg all the way up to his hip. Worse still, the prognosis is that his leg will have to remain that way for 12 weeks, all the way through Christmas. "I can't put full weight on it for 12 weeks," said Dietrich, who is expect- ing to be transferred back to St. Mary's hospital this week for more recovery. "It's kind of taken the starch out of my red suit." As a self-employed Santa and entertainer, the Christmas season is the biggest time of year for Dietrich and his family. His wife Jean has come to play Mrs. Claus over the years and his son Scott was one of his Christmas elves growing up. His son is now one of the top children's performers in all of Toronto, keeping up the family tra- dition. But the tradition will be on hold for the eldest Dietrich this year as he's in full recovery mode, although he promises to make sure there will be other Santas on duty to take his place. "Th ey'll be good; they just won't be as good," he said with a laugh. The only problem is the income from those engagements won't be coming to him, making Christmas a little less shiny for him and his fam- ily this year. Friends of the mall Santa have started a GoFundMe page for Dietrich at www.gofundme.com/save- santas-christmas-broken-hip. Th ey say Santa should be focused on making children's holiday wishes come true, not how he will pay his bills. Th ey're asking people to donate to a man who has dedicated his life to putting smiles on children's faces, and keeping the magic of Christmas alive. The modest Dietrich appreciates the help. "I depend on Christmas," he said, as it makes up a quarter of his income for the year. "It's disheartening not to be with the kids, and it would be really nice to show Santa a little bit of the same Christmas spirit." Santa looking for support
