MP1368 (10/2007) Principal CFP, CPCA, CDFA, RRC Th ursday, October 5, 2017 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • 19Serving your community since 1856 ARTS FOCUS e Grand River Jazz Society presents two spectacular concerts this weekend starting with the eight-piece Fresh Water Funk followed by New York City based the Kandinsky E ect on Saturday. Fresh Water Funk is an eight-piece funk project based in the Waterloo Region. They play all your funky faves like Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Tower of Power, and more. ey also have a few composers of their own in the group and have been known to, from time to time, play one or two original pieces. For this show they are covering some of the greats of the 70s funk groups, with their own twist, including Stevie Wonder, Average White Band, Tower of Power, Doobie Brothers, Bill Withers etc. e band includes Robin Haber- mehl on lead vocals and saxophone, Samuel Daniels on drums and vocals, Kathryn Scobie on trombone and vocals, Andre Gignac on bass and vocals, Thomas Grandin on saxophone, Rob Gellner on trumpet, Andriy Tykhonov on keyboard/organ, and John Bryndza on guitar. The Kandinsky Effect makes their first appearance at the Jazz Room on Oct 7. Origi- nally formed as a project to blend electronics and jazz, the Kandinsky Effect has matured over its 10 years to develop a truly unique sound that is hard to compare. As a group, the band is heavily in uenced by artists like Kneebody, Jaga Jazzist and Bono- bo, but the broader range of styles and in u- ences in the music can be attributed to the fact that everyone in the band is a composer and approaches writing from a very di erent place. Warren Walker is very into electronic pro- ducers like Flying Lotus, Gael Petrina is into projects like Death Grips and Bon Iver, and Caleb Dolister often listens to piano driven projects like Hauschka, or metal bands like Meshuggah. More often than not, each song begins as an individual sketch with the intention of nishing the idea and arrangement with the rest of the band. is allows the broader in uence sphere to directly a ect each composition. e band features Walker on saxophone and e ects, Gael Petrina on bass and e ects and Caleb Dolister on drums e Grand River Jazz Society is an all volun- teer organization. Volunteers are always wel- come to help greet patrons at the door and generally assist in managing the event. Author Sonja Larsen is the winner of the 2017 Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non- Fiction for her memoir, Red Star Tattoo: My Life as a Girl Revolutionary published by Random House Canada. Red Star Tattoo is a compelling story of the writer's unconventional and transient youth, as well as her personal experience in counter- culture organizations, including her association with a clandestine wing of the Communist Party of USA. "As is the case with lives themselves, all memoirs are unique, but this seems especially true of Sonja Larsen's Red Star Tattoo: My Life as a Girl Revolutionary," said Bruce Gillespie, an award juror and professor in Wilfrid Laurier University's Digital Media and Journalism pro- gram in a press release. "In this coming-of-age story, she looks back at a childhood and ado- lescence spent searching for a sense of connec- tion and purpose beyond her family, rst in a commune and later as part of what she eventu- ally recognized as a cult whose purported goal was to incite an American communist revolu- tion. She captures the environment of para- noia, violence, and futility in which she grew up in a stark, frank style that never tugs on read- ers' heartstrings or asks for their pity. Instead, Larsen presents a clear-eyed look at her almost unbelievable past and crafts a character study in resilience that is eminently engaging." In addition to Red Star Tattoo, the shortlist for the 2017 Edna Staebler Award included: e Shoe Boy by Duncan McCue (Nonvella) and e Elephants in My Backyard by Rajiv Suren- dra (Random House Canada). Sonja Larsen will be celebrated at two public events Nov. 9 and 10 at Wilfrid Laurier Universi- ty, which administers the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction.
