26_V1_WAT_Sep28.indd In the HBO series e Newsroom, my favou-rite writer, Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network, etc.) utilizes the term "the greater fool" as a raison d'être for both Will McAvoy, the main character, as a newsman and for ACN, his ctional cable news channel. Although the term's origin lies in econom- ics and isn't a attering one, Sorkin co-ops it as a call to arms for those idealis- tic enough to believe that there is both purpose and nobility in seeking the greater good. He adds a touch of Don Quixote for good measure and the rest you'll have to read up on or stream online. Brothers Brian and Mike Denomme are nobody's fools but they are just foolish enough to believe despite a world that currently seems overrun by sear- ing cynicism and bleak forecasts, the greater good still exists. And here's the better news -- they're not alone. To best tell the story of K-W Leg- acy and its good deeds, let's begin at the beginning. In 2014, a group of like-minded friends had the notion that they could come together and make a difference in their community. They weren't entirely sure at the time what it would be and what it would look like but they had an effective slogan to act as their guiding light: "Good friends; greater deeds". Eventually the group decided that they would make use of their own skills and net- works to assist startup initiatives in the Tri-City area in order to leave a lasting legacy. To get the ball rolling fundraising-wise, a "Golf For Scholarships" program was estab- lished that would o er nancial assistance to local high school students in the hopes that they would one day give back to their commu- nity. ink of it as a Pay-It-Forward-Comes-Full- Circle kind of idea. It's well-conceived, well- intentioned and well, some- thing both Will McAvoy and Aaron Sorkin would be proud of. The first fundraising golf tournament centred around a reunion of St. Jerome's High School alumni of which the Denomme brothers are two. It was such a resounding success that two golf courses (Con- estoga and Grey Silo) were needed to co-host the event. The third installment of the now-annual event was played earlier this month and in three years, "Golf For Scholarships" has raised more than $250,000. Even Don Quixote in his wildest imagination didn't see that coming. Thus far the money raised from Golf For Scholarships, under the umbrella of K-W Leg- acy, has handed out 20 scholarships valued at $5,000 each to 20 local high school grads at 14 di erent schools in both the public and sepa- rate school systems.
