I'm not sure it's possible, but I'd like to attempt it anyway. You see, I've been wondering to myself lately whether it's possible to meet everyone who lives here in Waterloo. Th at's right, every single person. By meeting, I mean encounter- ing each person face-to-face and saying hello. I have no expectation of folks needing -- or even wanting -- to say hi back. Some recent online research yielded rather wide-ranging results, but it appears safe to estimate that the average person meets some- where between 10,000 and 80,000 people over the course of their life- time. I'm going to place myself on the higher end of this spectrum due to the fact that we live in a fairly populated area and I'm not exactly shy. Nor have I yet mastered the art of knowing when things are better left unsaid. As of 2016, the population of Waterloo is estimated at just over 100,000 people. Clearly I've got my work cut out for me if I want to meet everyone, from a logistical standpoint if noth- ing else. How do I keep track of who I have and haven't met? How can I account for the natural ebb and flow of our population, including births, deaths and folks that move away? Remember how easy it was to meet people when we were kids? "Hi. Want to be friends?" "Okay." It was as simple as that. Off you'd go with your newest pal, not the least bit concerned that you didn't yet know their name. The parents of young chil- dren have it pretty easy too when it comes to meeting new people. I can recall effortlessly striking up conversations with other moms as we stood around the playground. We'd start out admiring how adorable each other's child was, then quickly escalate into detailed retellings of personal parenting experiences, often culminating with childbirth itself. I can picture vividly how my teenage girls would react should I employ such tactics in this day and age. A roll of the eyes and an exas- perated sigh would be followed quickly by, "Oh, mom. Seriously?" I've had a parenting resurgence of sorts with the arrival last month of Lucy, our rescue dog. Passing by other dog owners while walk- ing through the neighbourhood or in nearby parks often results in an exchange, particularly if their dog is a rescue too. Lucy highlights for me the ben- efit of becoming interested and engaged in something new, in this case pet adoption. I've gotten to meet all kinds of folks I might never have encoun- tered otherwise. Mutual admiration of our furry family members quickly leads to discussions of breed and behav- iour, not to mention grooming, obedience and, believe it or not, daycare options. It appears Lucy will be quite useful in my quest to meet as many folks as possible here in Waterloo. (Don't worry cat owners, I'll think of something.)
