The Ontario Nurses Association members have been without a con- tract since June 30 and "are absolutely insulted by their employer's proposal to gut nurses' benefits," said the ONA in a statement. Conciliation talks were held Feb, 28, with no success. Mediation is scheduled for March 27. If mediation fails, strike action could go into effect March 29. "Bargaining has been very different this round versus our past experiences with this employer. After seven days at the bargaining table, these highly skilled professionals are insulted, dis- respected, disillusioned, and devalued by this employer," said Vicki McKen- na, ONA first vice-president. The region's 131 public health nurses provide services including pre- venting chronic disease, monitoring, investigating and controlling infec- tious disease outbreaks, and providing sexual health clinics and blood testing. They also provide harm reduction ser- vices, naloxone training, sexual health services in high schools, pregnancy counselling and prenatal support. St. Jerome's grad named Bishop of Peterborough Daniel Miehm, a grad of St. Jerome's High School, has been named Bishop of Peterborough. Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi, Apostic Nuncio to Canada, announced that Pope Francis appointed Miehm as Bishop of the Dioscese of Peterbor- ough on Friday. Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, bishop of Hamilton, issued a brief statement following the announce- ment: "Bishop Daniel Miehm served the Diocese of Hamilton diligently as Auxiliary Bishop for the past four years. We are grateful for his years of service and we are sorry to lose him. He will be an excellent Bishop for the Diocese of Peterborough. We wish him well," he said in a press release. St. Jerome's High School closed in 1990. The original building remains in downtown Kitchener. It is current- ly the location of the St. Lous Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centre.
