22 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2017 By Adam Jackson Chronicle Sta The Sir John A. Macdonald (SJAM) Highlanders had their quest for a Waterloo County three-peat spoiled by the Waterloo Collegiate Institute (WCI) Vikings last Wednesday. Th e Highlanders, senior boys' basketball champions in 2015 and 2016, lost the 2017 WCSSAA title game 69-47. "Th is is just the beginning for us," said Bryce Scarrow, a Grade 12 student on the Vikings, after the WCSSAA title win at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute last Wednesday. At CWOSSA on Saturday, both the Vikings and Highland- ers were edged out, with the favourites, the St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Saints, taking the title and mov- ing on to compete at OFSAA. For WCI in the WCSSAA fi nals, it was Aaron Grubb lead- ing the way with 20 points, while Mark Sapiter pitched in with 16. For the Highlanders, it was Maksim Koprivica with 20 points and Chris Bullock with 11. Despite the slight setback for the Highlanders, two senior boys' titles in three years is an accomplishment, especially considering the young talent the junior program has pro- duced and nurtured for the last number of years. "Most of our players are in Grade 11 … they're already really good and they're only going to get better from here. We're still going to be a good team for years to come," said Nino Spasik, a Grade 12 student at SJAM. "It's good coaching and we're all passionate about the game. "Th e more we practice, the better we get." Highlanders' WCSSAA three-peat spoiled Sir John A.
