SADDLER Hollenbeack of the Heavy Battery writes (FROM FRANCE)

Miss E.]. Padginton, Colborne, received the following interesting letters from Pte. Walter Sutton and Saddler Robt. Hollenbeack, who are in France:

France, September 28th, 1915

"Dear Miss Padginton:
Received your letter of August 31st yesterday, also parcel. Many thanks for the same. It was certainly a great treat. It arrived in good condition.

We have been in France about two weeks from one place to another, travelling mostly at night. I like France much better than England. If we only had tents or some shelter it would be O.K. It is getting quite cold here at night and it has been raining for three or four days. We are making good with our guns that's one good thing. We are not allowed to say in our letters where we are or what we are doing, so if I ever come back I will have lots of interesting things to tell.
We are the only Canadians in this part. I thought I would be able to see Harry Scott but I'm afraid I will be disappointed. I don't know where the rest of the 2nd Contingent went to Col. Odell is not with us now. Major Scully of Montreal is our officer commanding. We are sorry to lose our Colonel but we can't help these things.

I did not have a chance to see Earl Ives while in England haven't seen Fred Douglas since I left. Terrence Manley is still in England. He was sick when we left, also Dick Stone.

Yours sincerely,
Bob

"Cobourg World
This collection contains nearly 300 letters from World War One published in The Cobourg World, a local newspaper published in Cobourg, Ontario. Newspapers across Canada regularly printed letters home from overseas, either letters written directly to the newspaper by the soldiers, or first written to the family and then contributed to the paper by the family. Collections such as those from The Cobourg World provide a fascinating look at the relationship of community and war as played out in the pages of the local newspaper. All letters in the collection have been previously published in the newspaper and were also later collected by local historian Percy Climo in a work entitled "Let Us Remember". The dates for which the letters are listed represent the dates on which they were published, as the original dates of the letters are not always indicated. Where the original date of writing is known it will be part of the letter text. Introductions to the letters and editorial comments as they appeared in the newspaper have been left as published. All transcriptions have been taken from copies on microfilm and as such there are no scans for this collection."
