Visit cogeco.ca/yourworld Starting subway projects in Toronto, expanding GO train ser- vice and improving road infra- structure were just a few of the topics Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney discussed during an Oakville visit on Tues- day, Dec. 10. The minister spoke before a sold-out crowd of 184 members of the Oakville Chamber of Com- merce at the Argus Road Holiday Inn. She said it is an exciting time and she is proud to be working on plans to deliver the biggest public transit expansion the province has seen. "Our plan for Toronto's sub- way network will be transforma- tive, making it a truly regional system to complement our exist- ing GO system," said Mulroney. "Our government is also com- mitted to moving forward with projects that will deliver more transportation options for people here in Halton." Mulroney pointed to the Wye- croft Road extension and bridge project, which the province has pledged to support with a grant of $57.6 million. Currently, Wyecroft Road is disconnected at Bronte Creek -- forcing local traffic to divert north to the QEW or south to resi- dential neighbourhoods. The new road extension and bridge will create an important east-west connection and is ex- pected to bring much needed traf- fic relief to the area. Mulroney said the province is improving rush hour service for people in Oakville by introducing the largest increase to GO train service in the last five years. She said this includes adding 19 new GO train trips and extend- ing 25 existing GO train trips each week on the Lakeshore West Line. This increase is expected to provide more than 400,000 addi- tional train seats for Greater To- ronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) commuters each week. The minister said there are no shortage of reasons to improve traffic infrastructure in the GTHA. She said this area continues to be one of the fastest growing ur- ban areas in all of North Ameri- ca, with around 100,000 residents added annually. "With more people needing to get around each day our trans- portation infrastructure needs to keep up with that demand," said Mulroney. "In the GTHA today the aver- age commute to and from work is 48 minutes and for many it is even longer than that. Not only is it a major inconvenience in our daily lives, but it costs the province a great deal in terms of lost produc- tivity. The C.D. Howe Institute has said our region loses $11 bil- lion in productivity each year as a result of gridlock. According to the Toronto Region Board of Trade, gridlock adds $400 million to the cost of goods in our region." She said the province has com- mitted to investing $144 billion over the next decade to build and improve transit systems, roads, bridges and broadband networks across the Ontario. Mulroney said the province is also looking into: Ways to sup- port the development of CVAC (Connected Vehicles/Automated Vehicles); the possibility of driv- erless trucks on Ontario roads; and even the potential of high- ways strictly for autonomous ve- hicles.
