The death occurred in West Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon last of James Ithamer Theal, long a prominent businessman and resident of Grimsby, in his 72nd year.
In the passing of James Theal, Grimsby has lost a citizen who for over 40 years took a leading interest in the development of the town and district and it was with deep regret that his legion of friends and business associates learned of his demise, although it was not entirely unexpected as he had been in ailing health for some months past.
Born in South Grimsby, October 21st, 1881, a son of Thomas and Janet (Irvine)Theal, he came with his brother Richard to Grimsby in 1910 and entered the flour and feed business. Throughout the years he was associated with his brother in the bakery business, grocery business, hardware store, a manufacturing concern and for the second time in the grocery business from which he retired 12 years ago and since then had conducted a real estate and insurance business.
Always taking a deep interest in municipal affairs he served as a member and chairman of the Board of Education and was the first Reeve and County Council representative for the Town of Grimsby. When the town purchased the electric light and power system in 1941 he became a member of the Hydro Commission and served on that board continuously until his retirement in January last.
Fraternally, he was a past master of Union Lodge, No. 7, A.F. and A.M., G.R.C., and a member of the Scottish Rite. He took an active part in the affairs of Trinity United Church and was one of the oldest members of the session, and a former superintendent of the Sunday School.
He is survived by his wife, the former Olive Force; a son, Dr. Irvine Theal, Courtenay, B.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Dan Wells (Betty), of Palmerston; two brothers, Richard, of Grimsby, and Herbert of Dunnville; and a sister, Mrs. Howard Bartlett, of Dunnville; also 9 grandchildren.
The body rested at the Stonehouse Funeral Home where funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon by Rev. R.K. Lemkay of Trinity United Church, and were largely attended.
Casket bearers were Wiley and Lloyd Theal, Gordon and Ivan Bartlett, Paul Stewart and LaVerne Panpalin.
Interment was in Queen's Lawn Cemetery.
