The arrest and charge follows a lengthy investigation that lasted more than five months. It began on May 7, when Halton Regional Police responded to the Maplehurst Correctional Complex for a report of six inmates, all in the same cellblock, who had apparently overdosed on illicit drugs. Five of the six inmates were transport- ed to hospital where they recovered. The sixth inmate, a 24-year-old man, did not survive. His death was later determined to be caused by the consumption of fenta- nyl and carfentanil, according to Det.- Sgt. Kevin Britton of the force's homicide squad. As a result of a lengthy investigation, homicide detectives, with support from the regional coroner and the Centre of Forensic Sciences, arrested and charged a male inmate. Michael Fournier, 30, of Cambridge, is charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and drug traf- ficking. His next scheduled court appearance is Nov. 14.
